It was great to welcome visiting Jesuits from Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne to last month’s celebration of the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the Sevenhill Jesuit community and ministries. Thank you to our Sevenhill Altar Society volunteers and to the large number of volunteers from both Sevenhill and Riverton parishes, and the Sevenhill Retreat Centre staff, who worked generously to support the Mass in St Aloysius’ Church and the dinner at the Barn at La Storta. At the Mass, Bishop Gregory O’Kelly, S.J. reflected on the life and legacy of Fr Aloysius Kranewitter, S.J., the founder of the Jesuit Mission at Sevenhill. After founding the Jesuit ministries at Sevenhill in 1851, Fr Kranewitter was missioned to Melbourne in 1870, where he served until his death at Heidelberg on 25 August 1880. Bishop O’Kelly spoke about the enormous adversity that Fr Kranewitter faced, and the power of Fr Kranewitter’s practice of praying for patience, courage and hope.
