The Kindness of the Risen Lord Jesus
All throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus was humble and kind toward people. Yes, there were times when He confronted religious hypocrites sharply. Even so, no one can accuse Jesus of being harsh or heavy-handed. After all, Jesus Himself said that He is โgentle and lowly in heartโ (Matthew 11:28). And His humility and kindness were fully displayed in His suffering and death on the cross.
But what about now?
Weโve just had the wonderful Easter weekend, reflecting on His death and resurrection. Itโs great to know that Jesus defeated death by rising from the grave. His resurrection shows us that He is now the triumphant King.
But does that mean He is no longer โgentle and lowly in heartโ? Now that He has risen from the dead, having completed the arduous mission of humiliation and suffering, is He still humble and patient? When Iโm distraught because I have once again failed to live up to His teaching, can I still expect kindness from the triumphant, risen Jesus?
John chapter 21 shows us the wonderful truth that our risen Lord Jesus is still as kind as ever toward us. He is still the Good Shepherd who feeds His sheep, just as He offered chargrilled fish and bread to His disciples, saying, โCome and have breakfastโ (John 21:12).
He forgives and restores Peter, who denied Him previously: โSimon son of John, do you love me? โฆ Feed my sheepโ (John 21:17).
He still patiently teaches us when we are slow to understand Him and calls us to follow Him: โโฆ You must follow meโ (John 21:22).
Friends, our risen Lord Jesus is still full of love and compassion. In fact, now that He has been glorified, He is even more able to help us in times of need. His compassion, His kindness, His patience, and His graceโnone of these are diminished by His victorious resurrection.
So let us go and give ourselves to Jesus. He can be trusted with our lives. He welcomes us and will help and forgive us, as always.
