Find your Identity in God

That’s easier said then done though. I personally struggle with this often. We are born into a sin filled world that tells us what’s wrong with us over and over until we believe it. Our identity is usually based on what we we’re told and shown about ourselves at a young age - our family are the first to start shaping our identity. Then there’s school....what a mine field that can be! This is when peers start to speak over us and it becomes our whole world. If you make it through this then you have the workplace to contend with. Or you could be doing what I did and you could be making your job your identity.

But it’s all lies. You are not what you do. You are not what the enemy says you are. You are not what others say you are. You are not what that voice in your own mind says you are - we can lie to ourselves, in fact, we’re quite good at it.

The only Truth is God.

God says we are Holy, Righteous and Redeemed. God says he has a plan and a purpose for us. God says we are forgiven. God says we are made new. But today I want you to remember that God says we are made in HIS image. We are a deliberate reflection of God. We have a new identity the moment we accept Jesus. And because of Jesus, we also have the ability to have a personal relationship with God. So when our old ‘world shaped’ identity comes knocking on the door, we can CHOOSE to go to our God and we can CHOOSE to believe what He says.

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This verse makes me appreciate submission. We need to submit to God and that includes our ego. You may be good at particular things but boasting in them alone brings glory to you. Bringing glory to God should be our aim.

Did you ever think that maybe God designed us with weaknesses on purpose? After all, if we have all the strength we need, where is our need for God? And this world 🌎 sure could do with hearing the message that we don’t have to do it all in our strength. How many unbelievers do you know who are always searching for ways to do it on their own, that feel like they are failures because they can’t. It breaks my heart to watch and I just want to tell them it’s ok, you’re not meant to do it on your own. There is a God, who if we submit to and admit our weaknesses to, will use them to show His strength and be our strength.

For when I am weak, He is strong 💪🏼

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭33:3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Do you call on God when you want answers or an understanding? Do you take things to Him first or as a last resort? Tough question I know, but if I’m honest, I don’t always go to Him first. I tend to go to trusted Christian friends. I’m fortunate enough to have some great friends who point me back to God.

The thing is, when you go to God directly, that’s when answers or revelations come. He can reveal things no human can. And even if neither comes (in the timing we want anyway) there’s the indescribable peace that only God can give when you surrender and take everything to Him.

It’s also tempting to help our friends when they ask us for help and God certainly uses people and friendships to help others grow. But as we should with ourselves, we need to point to God first. Maybe when a friend comes to you for advise or counsel, maybe the first question could be ‘What has God said about it so far?’

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This verse makes me think of the old saying ‘do unto others as you would have done unto you’ which I now know as a Christian is from the bible (most old sayings are 😏) That’s what this really comes down to. If you want to be shown mercy, you need to show it also. Even when it’s difficult. Even when someone’s mistake makes your life harder. Even if someone’s forgetfulness means you miss out on an opportunity you wanted. Even if you feel you have every right to be angry. Even if....

Everyone makes mistakes. You make mistakes. I make mistakes. I always feel bad when I’ve affected someone badly from my mistake - and the relief I’ve felt when that person has shown me mercy. When they say ‘that’s ok, I know you didn’t mean to’. And the even deeper relief you feel when you realise they mean it. They treat you the same, talk to you the same.

How much of a blessing is it for us to do that for someone else ❤️

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV

Pray continually. In all circumstances. Prayer doesn’t have to be a well prepared speech or planned in detail. Prayer doesn’t have to be long or full of fancy words. God just wants to hear your voice - He yearns for you to talk to Him. And He wants you to talk to Him ALL the time. If you think about it, that’s how relationships are built.

Sharing you thoughts, worries, joys, dreams and the more often you do this, the deeper the relationship. Share with Him the big stuff, but don’t be afraid to share the little stuff either. Nothing is too big or too small for our amazing God and that includes anything you think might be insignificant to Him. If it matters to you then it matters to God - because YOU matter to God.

So go ahead, get sharing 🙏🙏🙏

“Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16:17-18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

You know, I only actually came to understand this verse properly about a year ago thanks to a fellow Bible College student sharing the revelation he had with us. I always thought Jesus was saying He will build His church on Peter because he is steadfast and reliable, like a rock.

But Jesus wasn’t talking about Peter himself, Jesus was referring to the God given revelation he had about who Jesus is. The revelation Peter had, is the rock that Jesus will build his church on. Not Peter himself, but the revelation Peter had. That same revelation in all of us is what Jesus builds His church on today. We can all be a rock Jesus can build His church on when we have the revelation of who He is.

Apparently this is a well known understanding of this verse by other Christians but I thought I would share it here in case anyone else is still learning like me 😉

“For we live by faith, not by sight.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Faith is all about trusting what you can’t see. And who better to trust than God! He has proven time and time again that He can be trusted, more than ourselves even.

We may not have foresight but we do have hindsight and hindsight teaches me He is worthy of our trust. It may not always turn out to what your idea of good was at the time, but looking back, it was always the best for us. No one loves you like God does. No one puts as much time and energy into turning things for your good as God does. No one else has ever sent their son to die, to save us.

He saved a wretch like me 🙌🏻❤️

“saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!””
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭7:12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Sometimes I forget to give the glory to God. Sometimes I get proud of the good works I do. So let me declare right now that this Street Reach ministry would not be what it is without our glorious God! Sure, we could still be out here giving away free food and coffee. But that’s not all that happens out here.

What happens out here is connection. We talk and God leads that conversation where it needs to go. We pray for people and God leads that prayer to a deeper level. God brings the healings. God brings the revelations. God brings everything - because He loves us and desperately wants a relationship with every single one of us

We’re just a bunch of people willing to trust God and be obedient

“The more talk, the less truth; the wise measure their words.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭10:19‬ ‭MSG‬‬

How many times have you been in a heated discussion and thought afterwards ‘if only I’d kept my mouth shut’? How many times do you say things you don’t really mean or wish you could take back? We often realise afterwards that we got off track from the truth of the situation and added our own stuff. Added our feelings, added our judgement, added our offence. And so does the person we’re talking to.

It won’t be easy, or a quick change but why don’t we all try to go into difficult conversations remembering this Proverb. Even if you’ve already started down the wrong track, stop the moment you realise and try to get back to the truth with measured words. The more we do this the more natural a response it will become ❤️

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Not sure about you but I’d like life and peace over death please!
So how do we do that? What is this verse telling us?

It’s about where we focus and where we let our mind dwell. What sort of thoughts float through your mind every day? Do you focus on worldly things? How long till I finish work? What are the kids doing? Will I have enough money for...? It’s hard not to and you do need to think about these things at times. But how often do you think about Jesus? How often do you talk to God or feel Holy Spirit? What’s the balance? When our mind is focused on things of this world it’s easy to lose focus on God. Don’t feel bad if you do, we all lose focus on God at times, the key is to be more aware of our thoughts and recognise when to change their focus.

I’ve noticed when I focus on worldly things, I can get depressed or anxious very quickly (brings on an attitude of death) But when I focus on God my whole countenance and attitude changes. I start to see hope where I saw none before. I start remembering the promises of God - it brings life and peace
