SEPTEMBER: THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR

September opens the new ecclesiastical year in the life of the Church. Just as nature begins to blossom anew with spring here in Australia, the Church invites us to renew our spiritual lives - to begin again with fresh zeal in prayer, worship and repentance.

It is a time to dedicate the year ahead to the Lord, entrusting ourselves to His mercy and love.

During this month, we also celebrate the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross (14th September) - a great feast which reminds us that through the Cross, joy has come into all the world, and through the Cross we find the strength to follow Christ.

We are blessed to gather as a parish throughout this month for the services of our Church. Below you will find the program of Holy Services for September here at the Parish and Community of St Demetrios.

May this new ecclesiastical year be one of blessing, growth and sanctification for all of us.

for children in years 4 - 6

CRU Galston Gorge Camp & Conference Centre

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Annual Sunday School Camp will be held on Tuesday 6 - Thursday 8 October 2026 at the CRU Galston Gorge Camp & Conference Centre.

Sunday School Camp is an opportunity for children to experience the richness and fullness of our faith in an enjoyable and exciting atmosphere. During the course of these 3 days, the Sunday School teachers of our parishes will lead interesting discussions of a spiritual nature, Bible studies, craft activities, many games and other challenges. The climax of the Camp will be a Divine Liturgy which will be celebrated at the campsite.

Matins and Divine Liturgy

On Wednesday, 2 September, our Holy Church commemorates the Holy Martyr St. Mamas, a young Christian who remained steadfast in his faith in Christ and courageously gave his life for the Gospel.

St. Mamas is also especially remembered for his profound love and compassion for God’s creation, and particularly for the animals of the wilderness. For this reason, he is traditionally depicted riding a lion and carrying a lamb - powerful and beautiful symbols of his unique relationship with God’s creation.

May the example of St. Mamas’ unwavering faith, courage and love inspire us to remain faithful to Christ and to show compassion and care towards all that God has created and entrusted to us.

May St. Mamas intercede for us all!

Following the Divine Liturgy, the Blessing of Water (Lesser Sanctification) will be conducted, marking both the first day of the month and the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year in the life of the Church.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CAMP 2026 – AN ORTHODOX ADVENTURE! ☦️

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, children currently in Years 4–6 are invited to attend the Annual Greek Orthodox Sunday School Camp during the October school holidays.

📅 Tuesday 6 – Thursday 8 October 2026
📍 CRU Galston Gorge Camp & Conference Centre
💰 $380 per child

The cost includes accommodation, meals, activities and bus transportation to and from the campsite.

It will be three wonderful days of faith, friendship, fellowship and fun!
