The only way we can get beyond the wheel of birth and death is to transform our whole life into a Dharma practice. There are many qualities which we need on the path, including generosity, patience, loving kindness, compassion, and especially the ability to be aware, to be present and gain genuine insight. Our whole life has to become our practice. Everybody we meet is our practice. Everything is teaching us something if we are only open to learning. Then, when our whole life becomes our practice, we cannot say, ‘I have no time.’

Why do Buddhists meditate?

In Buddhism, meditation is more than simply relaxing or quietening the mind. It trains our attention, helps us become more familiar with our thoughts and emotions, and gradually builds greater clarity, compassion, and wisdom.

Through meditation, we learn to observe the mind rather than being carried away by everything that arises.

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares this message following the recent floods near the border between Nepal and Tibet.

Dear Dharma friends,
I was deeply saddened to learn of the devastating floods and debris flows that have struck communities near the Nepal-Tibet border.

In a very short time, homes, roads, bridges, and livelihoods have been swept away. Many people have lost their lives, many more remain missing, and countless families have been separated from their loved ones or left without shelter and basic necessities. The suffering caused by such a disaster touches not only human beings, but also the many animals and other living beings affected by the destruction of their environment.

I cannot imagine the confusion, fear, and profound sense of loss that those affected, and the families of those who are missing, must be experiencing. All I can offer is my heart, my prayers, and a humble reflection based on the Buddha’s teachings.

According to these teachings, life is not defined by an absolute beginning or end. It unfolds continuously, in dependence upon causes and conditions. Physical forms arise and pass away; yet this does not mean that all connection, meaning, or love is lost.

When we lose those dear to us, it is only natural that our hearts feel heavy and disturbed. Their physical presence may no longer be with us, but the love we shared, the meaning they brought to our lives, and the qualities they embodied continue to live within us. We can honour them by carrying these qualities forward with compassion, courage, and care for others.

My prayers and thoughts are with all those touched by this calamity: those who have died, those who are missing, the injured, the bereaved, and all those who have lost their homes and means of livelihood.

I also wish to express my deep appreciation for the tireless work of the rescue teams, medical workers, police, army personnel, local communities, and volunteers. Their courage, compassion, and selfless efforts bring support and hope at a time of great hardship.

I ask all our monasteries, centres, and Dharma friends in Nepal, Tibet, India, and throughout the world to keep everyone affected in their hearts. Please dedicate the merit of your Dharma practice and your aspirations to the victims of this disaster, and to all those working to bring relief.

I encourage all those who are able to offer material support to do so through reliable relief organisations. Whether or not we are able to contribute materially, our prayers and aspirations can bring benefit.

May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.

With prayers,

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa

Clear Lamp on the Path of Liberation

Ananda Buddhist Centre warmly invites everyone to join our weekly study group exploring the book “Clear Lamp on the Path of Liberation” by Lama Ngaklo Rinpoche, translated by Lama Choedak Rinpoche.

Whether you are new to Buddhist teachings or have been practising for many years, you are very welcome.

About the Book
Clear Lamp on the Path of Liberation is a practical and inspiring guide to the preliminary practices of Tibetan Buddhism (Ngöndro). Although called “preliminary”, these are profound teachings that help us establish a strong foundation for Dharma practice and bring greater wisdom and compassion into our lives.

The book explores:
● the preciousness of our human life;
● impermanence and the reality of change;
● karma; cause and effect
● understanding samsara and the wish for liberation;
● Refuge — finding a genuine direction for our spiritual path;
● Bodhicitta — cultivating compassion and the wish for all beings to be free from suffering;
● Purification and Mandala Offering — clearing obstacles, cultivating generosity and creating positive conditions for practice; and
● Guru Yoga — deepening our connection with the teachings, the lineage and our own potential for awakening.

Studying Together
Each week we will explore a section of the book together, with time for study, reflection, questions, discussion and practice.

There is no need to have previous experience of Tibetan Buddhism or Ngöndro. A sincere interest in learning about and exploring the Dharma is enough.

This is an opportunity to slow down, contemplate these precious teachings and discover how they can become meaningful in our everyday lives — while enjoying the support and friendship of practising together.

Come with your questions, your curiosity. Come as you are.

We warmly welcome everyone to join us on this journey of cultivating wisdom, compassion and liberation.

May our study and practice be of benefit to all beings.
