The other day, my daughter asked me why I was going to youth group.
I paused. I felt I owed her a good answer.
“Because I want young people to have the chance to know God, to feel safe, and to know they are loved.”
She thought for a moment.
“Oh… not every kid knows God.”
Then came the realisation.
“Oh, I get it! That’s why we do Kids Church. So all the children can know God.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Then she said, “I know God.”
“Yes, you do.”
“And I see God. When we open up the Bible and read the stories, I see Him. And when we do craft, I get to know more about Him. And we have snacks and chats and stuff.”
I’ve been thinking about that conversation ever since.
I love that she spoke about knowing God, not just knowing about Him. That she sees Him in Scripture. And that her heart was for other children to know Him too.
Children aren’t just the disciples of tomorrow. They are disciples of Jesus today.
One of our wonderful kids leaders recently reminded me that we often underestimate what children are capable of when it comes to faith. She’s right.
Children can know God, grow in faith, and help others discover Him too.
But discipleship doesn’t belong to Sundays alone.
It grows around dinner tables, through bedtime conversations, open Bibles, shared questions, and the ordinary moments of life.
It takes homes, families, friends, leaders and a whole village of people walking alongside our children.
May we be a church that doesn’t just teach children about Jesus, but makes room for them to genuinely know Him.
Because if we’re honest, they’re helping us see Him more clearly too. ❤️
