This week, John will continue our SEED series by opening up the beautiful words of Psalm 126:

Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.

Carrying what has been entrusted to us, and learning to share this treasure with others, requires both wisdom and courage.

Last Sunday we looked at the parable of the sower/soils/seeds, which comes after Luke’s account of Jesus going from town to village, proclaiming and (bringing / demonstrating) the kingdom of God. Luke also framed the parable with stories of the healing of women. The first group of women were named because they were well known in the early church; they continue to ‘minister’. The parable invites us to join Jesus and these women in scattering seeds of the kingdom of God in all places, and, like Jesus, to embody the kingdom by caring for the poor and the oppressed (’possessed’ by oppressive culture, tradition, and empire) so that seeds may germinate and grow a hundredfold… We are entrusted with seed to sow and are called to be faithful stewards of God’s manifold grace. When good seed finds good soil, an abundant harvest awaits!

This Sunday, our text is Ecclesiastes chapter 3, which is also very well known. It invites us to discern the time and season we are in. Knowing which season we are in is another key to faithful stewardship.

This week, we continue our series on Seed with the theme “Sowing in Good Soil.”
Tri will explore Jesus’ invitation for us to participate in what God is sowing, and the practices that help keep our hearts open to what may spring forth.

Last Sunday we began our new SEED series by exploring how “in the beginning” God created us to have seed to carry and gifts to share (Genesis 1). We are each called to steward our one, wild and precious life.

This week John and Penny will invite us to worship the God who works in ways that are often hidden and mysterious – much like the way a tiny seed becomes a great tree spreading its branches against a future sky.
