I've returned to Australia after a profound experience at Swimming Pool Projects 2019 Curatorial School. The level of discourse, camaraderie, care, accountability and 'being with' was beyond my expectations. I knew it would be great, I just didn't know how great.

Monumental thanks to Viktoria Draganova, Ida Tauslova and Krisztián Török for delivering this program and riding the wave with the participant curators.

Thanks and recognition also to our tutors and workshop leaders, Lyubo Draganov, Luchezar Boyadjiev, Dessislava Dimova, Barby Asante, Barbora Kleinhamplová, Lorenzo Sandoval, Peter Sit and Dragos Olea.

Now I'm not certain what MoodWar is going to become.

I'm still processing our shared experience and trying to find an eloquent way to discuss the learnings – but for now I can say that this school program has fundamentally altered the way I'm thinking, my approach to projects and relation to other practitioners, audience, and above all, friends.

A Bridge Could Be A Cucumber by Alex Dabi Zhevi - Night Screen.

Opening ⇨ tomorrow, Wednesday 6 February from 6-8pm.

"Our maternal grandparents were political refugees, emigrating from Bulgaria to Australia in the 1950s. Teenagers when they arrived, they had rarely ventured out of the valley or their village (selo) prior to their escape. In Australia, they experienced some cultural continuity through a large community of Balkan migrants living in diaspora. Preparing Bulgarian food became a bridge where tradition negotiates geographical distance and migration.

These signage-based texts are of the ‘peasant’ foods served on our tables countless times since our grandparents’ arrival. They are the staple dishes of family celebrations or after school snacks—unglamorous and non-exotic to a white audience. While these recipes are practical, they offer a deeply emotive experience. Food plays a symbolic role in our lives as lists, recipes and ingredients represent the practicalities of nourishment and survival. They express tradition and culture as what we eat becomes intangible and emotional, forming part of an economy of identity."
