Food for thought!
Prayer for God’s Elect and Called Servants
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ,
We come before You with thanksgiving and reverence, praying for Your elect, Your saints, Your Church, and every servant whom You have called and sent for the work of the Gospel.
Lord Jesus, You prayed for those whom the Father had given You:
“I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.”
— John 17:9
Father, we pray for those who belong to You.
Strengthen Your people.
Preserve Your saints.
Keep Your elect faithful to Christ.
Let their faith remain firm when they are tested, persecuted, discouraged, or weary.
Prayer for the Called Ministers
Lord, according to Ephesians 4:11–12, You have given apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers for the perfecting of the saints, the work of ministry, and the edifying of the Body of Christ.
We pray for every apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher, missionary, preacher, shepherd, and spiritual leader whom You have called.
Give them grace for their assignment.
Give pastors wisdom to shepherd Your people.
Give teachers understanding to rightly handle Your Word.
Give evangelists boldness to proclaim the Gospel.
Give apostles and leaders grace to establish and equip the Church.
Give every servant humility, discernment, holiness, courage, wisdom, and endurance.
Let them never seek their own glory, but let everything they do point people to Jesus Christ.
Sanctify Your Servants
Jesus prayed:
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
— John 17:17
Father, sanctify Your servants through Your truth.
Guard their hearts from pride.
Guard their minds from deception.
Keep them from compromise.
Keep them from false doctrine.
Keep them from temptation.
Let their private lives agree with their public ministry.
Give them clean hearts and steadfast spirits.
Let their character reflect the Christ they preach.
Protect Your Elect
Jesus prayed:
“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.”
— John 17:15
Father, keep Your people from evil.
Protect Your servants from spiritual attack, discouragement, division, deception, temptation, fear, and weariness.
Protect their families.
Protect their marriages.
Protect their ministries.
Protect their minds and emotions.
When they are weak, strengthen them.
When they are tired, renew them.
When they are discouraged, encourage them.
When they are attacked, give them grace to stand.
When they face opposition, give them courage.
Prayer for Those Who Will Believe
Jesus said:
“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.”
— John 17:20
Lord, we thank You that the prayer of Jesus reaches beyond the apostles to all who would believe through their testimony.
We pray for every saint who has heard the Gospel.
Strengthen new believers.
Mature Your people.
Restore those who have fallen.
Encourage those who are weary.
Bring back those who have wandered.
Establish Your Church in truth.
Let believers grow in grace, knowledge, holiness, love, and obedience.
Send Labourers Into the Harvest
Jesus commanded:
“Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”
— Matthew 9:38
Father, send labourers into Your harvest.
Raise up faithful preachers.
Raise up evangelists.
Raise up pastors.
Raise up teachers.
Raise up missionaries.
Raise up godly leaders.
Raise up men and women who will carry the Gospel without compromise.
Give them boldness to speak Your Word.
Let the Gospel have free course and be glorified.
Let souls be saved.
Let disciples be made.
Let the saints be equipped.
Let the Body of Christ be strengthened.
Prayer for Faithfulness
Father, according to 2 Timothy 1:9, You have called Your people with a holy calling.
Help them walk worthy of that calling.
Let them not abandon their assignment.
Let them not grow cold.
Let them not turn back.
Let them finish the race.
Let them keep the faith.
Let them remain faithful until the end.
For Your Word declares:
“Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:24
Therefore, we trust You with Your elect.
You called them.
You saved them.
You sanctify them.
You keep them.
You strengthen them.
You send them.
You will sustain them.
Let Your Church walk in unity, holiness, truth, love, and power.
Let every ministry gift function according to Your purpose.
Let every saint find their place in the Body of Christ.
Let every servant remain faithful to the One who called them.
And above everything, let Jesus Christ be exalted.
All glory belongs to You.
All honour belongs to You.
All praise belongs to You.
In the mighty, precious, and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
Amen.
