Some of you may remember this remarkable old heritage rose from past Buried Treasures newsletters, or from having it pointed out on one of our cemetery tours. Believed to be the French tea rose Madame Lambard, introduced in the 1870s, its soft double-petalled blooms are putting on a lovely display again. After careful pruning by FoCC members last year, removing old dead wood and clearing back the oldest trunk growth, this living piece of Coburg Cemetery history is thriving once more.

This ANZAC Day, we remember not only the soldiers who fought, but also those who served in other vital ways. At Coburg Cemetery lies the grave of Sister May Dickson, an Australian nurse whose wartime service took her from Australia to England, caring for sick and wounded soldiers during World War I. After becoming seriously ill herself while serving in a military hospital, May returned home but died in Melbourne in 1917 before reaching her family in Sydney. Her funeral drew huge crowds and she became the first woman in Australia to be buried with full military honours.

We were amazed by the turnout for round 2 of the Unfortunate Events Tour on Friday!

Thank you all for braving the cold (and the threat of rain, we definitely dodged the worst of it). We appreciate the support of everyone who joins us on our tours.

This was our final tour until winter passes, but we hope to see you all again at our next one!

To mark International Women’s Day, here’s a story about the amazing Anna Brennan who features in several Coburg Cemetery tours.

Anna Teresa Brennan (1879 – 1962) was the 13th child born to farmers Michael and Mary Brennan at Emu Creek in central Victoria. She attended the co-educational St Andrew's College, Bendigo, and in 1903 continued to drive daily by buggy to a coaching college some ten miles distant. Anna studied law at the University of Melbourne and became its first woman law graduate in 1909. In 1911 she became the second woman admitted to the Bar in Victoria and went on to appear in her first court case in 1913.
She worked in her brother Frank's law firm for more than 50 years, specialising in matrimonial law.
A social reformer and activist, she belonged to many organisations that championed women. She was a founding member of both the Melbourne Lyceum Club and the Catholic Women’s Social Guild. She also belonged to the National Council of Women and St Joan’s Alliance.
Anna wasn't the only influential member of the Brennan family. Several of her siblings went on to have distinguished careers.
The Anna Brennan Memorial Prize at the University of Melbourne commemorates her work. Active until the end, Anna had a fall on her way to a lecture on nuclear fission. Shortly after she contracted pneumonia and died.
