About our Diocese
Firstly we acknowledge Aboriginal Peoples are Australia's first peoples and Custodians of the land in which we live the joy of the Gospel. Our diocese occupies 980,000 square Kilometres, most of the state of South Australia , and going up to and including Uluru (Ayers Rock). We have 57 churches and thirteen schools faith and learning centres across the diocese. There are three Ho

mes for the aged and infirm, and Centacare – Catholic Social Services – operates out of several venues across the state. We are a gathering of communities scattered across vast distances, and we assemble in our schools and Homes and works for the poor, and in the churches of our parish centres. We are characterised in our terrain by the great Outback, the sheep and cattle stations and mining fields, the Aboriginal Lands, the spiritual centre of Uluru, the great stretches of wheat and barley in the Mid-North, the vines and orchards of the Riverland, the towns of the Gulf, the fishing and tourist and farming areas of the Eyre Peninsula, the beauty of the Flinders. Our people are very conscious of our story and the pioneering struggles of our Catholic forebears in this land, how our first priests, Austrian Jesuits from Sevenhill, came north with those first European settlers; how St Mary MacKillop herself established convent after convent to educate our young and old, as did the Good Samaritan Sisters later; how "drought and flooding rain" have tempered our people. We are from all backgrounds, from the First Australians to asylum seekers. We try to be the Body of Christ in this huge part of the Great Southland of the Holy Spirit. The diocese was established independent of the Southern ( Adelaide ) diocese in 1887. Port Pirie is the administrative centre of the Diocese, and Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ is our eleventh Bishop.

The bishops of the Province gathered in Port Pirie this week for a time of prayer, dialogue, and reflection on the life and mission of the Church across South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Present at the meeting were Archbishop Patrick O’Regan DD, Archbishop of Adelaide, Bishop Karol Kulczycki SDS, Bishop of Port Pirie, and Bishop Charles Gauci, Bishop of Darwin.

The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the joys, challenges, and pastoral priorities of the region, and to consider how the Church can continue to serve God and God’s people with faithfulness and care.

Representatives from various ministries also joined the bishops, contributing to the discussions in a spirit of collegiality and collaboration.

The meeting was a valuable expression of communion across the Province, strengthening the shared commitment to mission, pastoral care, and service.

Once again, we welcome the Missionaries of God’s Love Team to our diocese as they come to minister among us, especially to our young people.
Each year, their presence becomes not only a blessing for us but also a moment in which they themselves are enriched by the unique faith and joy of our youth.
We thank the Lord for the gift of their annual visit and pray that God may bless them abundantly.

Please find attached the schedule of their visit. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parishes, schools, and communities who have opened their doors and hearts to receive them.
May this time be one of true communion and blessing. Their presence among us is a beautiful expression of our Synodal Church—walking together toward God.

As their time with us is limited, we apologise that they are unable to visit every community.

Be assured, however, that they hold all of you in prayer, just as we hold them in ours. Let us continue to support their missionary work through our prayers.
