Port Adelaide Uniting Church

Port Adelaide Uniting Church Our worship seeks to be a creative, vibrant experience, for all ages, and for a variety of religious backgrounds. You are most welcome!

The life of the church congregation began in November 1849, when a group of Christians from various denominations who had been meeting, informally, in a sail loft in the Port formed themselves into the ‘Congregational Church of Port Adelaide’. The church met in three different buildings before the present church was built in 1867-8. In 1978 the church became part of the Uniting Church of Australia

. The church celebrated its Jubilee in November 1999. Historic tours of the church building and grounds can be arranged by calling the church on 8240 0200 or by emailing us. The building is built from Dry Creek sandstone with very elaborate brick work. The window and door arches feature alternating red and black bricks and the cornices are constructed of red and blue bricks. These colours are now faded but in its original condition it must have been a very colourful building. A feature of the church is the magnificent flight of steps at the front which sweep up to the entrance porch with its three wide arches. The interior seats 250 and is of traditional Christian church design with a high ceiling and Gothic styling. There is a large gallery across the back of the church and the original pipe organ at the front which has been restored to its original colours.

Unveiling the Teeny-weeny Gallerini's new exhibition on the theme of Peace. It features work by the children's class at Port Community Art Centre. Thanks also go to their teacher, Penny, for arranging the exhibition. It looks amazing, and really captures the theme of peace, something the world needs a lot more of at this time.

On this day - April 5 - in 1854, the 2nd Congregational Chapel in Port Adelaide was opened. The congregation began in Oct 1840 in a sail loft in Wills Street, until the stone church (this second chapel) was built in 1853-54. Sadly, the church was destroy by fire in 1866.
The third place of worship (in this picture) was opened in 1868. The church is now Port Adelaide Uniting Church.

The photo is part of our collection - the date and photographer are unknown.

Do you have any memories, stories, information or photographs of any of the Port Adelaide Congregational Churches that you would be prepared to share with us to add to our collection? We'd love to hear from you if you do.

Lent 5 - the Yellow Brick Road. Like the Lenten journey, the Yellow Brick Road is about finding out who we are as we find our way home with our companions. As we return to God, our true home, may we care for our companions along the way.
