Lama Tsongkhapa was born in 1357 in the remote region of Amdo. Even as a child, people noticed his calm presence, sharp mind, and natural kindness

He frequently dreamt of Atisha which was a sign that he would correct misunderstandings of the Dharma in Tibet and restore its purity, combining sutra and ta**ra, as Atisha had done.

At the age of seven, Tsongkhapa received novice vows from Choje Dondrub Rinchen and the ordination name Losang Dragpa. He continued to study in Amdo with this lama until he was sixteen, at which time he went to U-tsang (Central Tibet) to study further.

Tsongkhapa shows that true understanding grows where kindness, study, and humility meet.

Born in Amdo, trained by teachers of all Tibetan traditions — Sakya, Kagyu, Nyingma and Kadam teachers…
a scholar, yogi, and reformer…
a bridge between ancient India and our modern world

His legacy continues worldwide through thousands of centres and practitioners.

In the lead up to Lama Tsongkhapa day this year we will explore who this great leader was and how his relevance continues to this day.

Stay tuned.

Je Rinpoche reminds us:
we didn’t come into this world by accident.
This rare human life — with intelligence, freedom, and access to the Dharma — is a once-in-a-universe opportunity.

When we remember how fragile and brief it is, our priorities shift.
Attachment softens.
Clarity returns.
The heart opens.

Reflecting on this isn’t meant to make us fearful —
it’s meant to wake us up.
To help us use this life for what truly matters.

“May all beings everywhere, plagued by suffering of body and mind, obtain an ocean of happiness and joy.” — Shantideva

This simple verse comes from the Bodhicharyāvatāra, by Shantideva. Just as the wind moves through prayer flags,
may our own goodness ripple outward.

At a time when so many beings are experiencing strain in body and mind, this aspiration feels especially relevant.

Just as prayer flags never stop moving, may our intentions continue to spread in all directions.
May all beings everywhere discover an ocean of happiness and peace.

Lama Tsongkhapa reminds us that everything we experience arises from countless causes and conditions.
Nothing exists on its own — and because of that, transformation is possible. We continue to explore this each Sunday with Discovering Buddhism. See our website for more details- link in bio.

This reflection helps practitioners understand that a human life with access to teachings, teachers, and the capacity to practise is incredibly rare.
It naturally generates gratitude rather than taking life for granted.

You have agency. You have potential.
You can choose your direction.
Like holding a ticket in your hand — you can decide where to go.
