🙏 BCWA Proudly Supports the Safe Buddhism Initiative - all recordings and materials now available for use by all temples 🙏

The Buddhist Council of WA stands in full support of the Safe Buddhism Initiative, an important project focused on keeping our temples, monasteries, and centres safe, accountable, and transparent for everyone.

Led by Ven. Mettaji and the BSWA, with the help of the Nan Tien Institute of Higher Education, Insight Exchange, Australian Sangha Association and the Federation of Australian Buddhist Councils, this series takes an honest, practical look at areas that can sometimes be difficult to navigate. It bridges the gap between our spiritual ideals and the real-world governance needed to protect our communities. The workshops cover four essential pillars: understanding monastic vows (Vinaya), setting up clear codes of conduct, establishing proper dispute resolution, and ensuring independent support services are available for anyone facing harm or misconduct.

There are excellent, free resources available for temples and committees everywhere—including presentation slides, templates, and full workshop recordings to help organisations review and strengthen their own guidelines.

If you’d like to explore the materials or watch the sessions, you can find them here:

✨ 🌸 Building Our Future Together: Final Safe Buddhism Workshop🌸✨

Buddhism is built on a foundation of kindness and compassion. To keep our Buddhist communities strong and healthy, we’re focusing on how we can best support one another by putting safeguards in place and making sure everyone understands the vinaya codes our monastics abide by, the legal landscape in Australia and what to do when issues arise.

We’ve noticed that the women in our community haven’t been as well-represented in these recent sessions, and **we’d love to have you join the conversation.**

This isn’t about a crisis—it’s about being proactive. We are gathering again this Saturday to look at practical ways we can continue to foster a culture of respect and care. Your insights are a vital part of making sure our Sangha remains the welcoming, safe haven we all value so much.

Come along for a friendly, inclusive session as we share resources and strengthen our community ties.
📅 When: This Saturday, May 16th
📍 Where: Dhammaloka City Centre (with live-stream)

If you are in Western Australia, then take the opportunity to come along to this important event or watch the live stream from anywhere.

The Buddhist Society of Western Australia (BSWA) is pleased to announce a new online series focused on governance, ethics, and accountability within Buddhist organisations.

Drawing on BSWA’s considerable experience in these areas, this series—Safe Buddhism Initiative: Holding Organisations to Account—will be live-streamed across three Saturday sessions in May. It is designed to support both individuals and organisations across Australia in fostering safe, ethical, and well-governed Buddhist communities.

Session Dates and Times:

Saturday 2nd May, 1:00 – 2:30pm
Saturday 9th May, 1:00 – 2:30pm
Saturday 16th May, 1:00 – 2:30pm
Venue: Dhammaloka City Centre (with live-stream available)

The series will feature a blend of presentations and panel discussions
exploring key topics, including:
· Inspect the Vinaya of all Traditions and clearly understand the vows of a Monastic.
· Understand the importance of a Code of Conduct in every Buddhist location.
· Provide guidelines on Dispute resolution (where necessary) and the multiple paths, including external resources, presently available.
· Highlight Support services and Resources that are available (including Government agencies) for victims of abuse.

The Oath against Harm is an important Context for the 3 workshops, and will be highly encouraged: Oath Against Harm – Australian Sangha Assocation

The intention of the sessions is to encourage dialogue, right actions, and mindful and caring responses. Anyone can email [email protected] with questions and suggestions -which will guide the sessions. Material and toolkits will be posted online at the end of the 3 sessions.

Each session will include opportunities for open discussion and Q&A.
Recordings will also be made available via the BSWA YouTube channel.

We warmly invite all those interested in strengthening ethical practice and
accountability in Buddhist communities to participate.

Vesak 2026: A Season of Compassion and Unity in Western Australia ☸️✨

On behalf of the Buddhist Council, we wish our entire community a deeply peaceful and Happy Vesak.

Vesak is the most sacred time of our calendar, marking the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. As celebrations take place throughout Western Australia from April to June, we reflect on the values of mindfulness and loving-kindness that define our path.

We are a diverse community, and our strength lies in our inclusion. We are proud to see the Buddhist faith recognised at the highest levels of government as a vital thread in the cultural fabric of WA.

To mark this auspicious season, we are honoured to share two official messages of support and recognition addressed to our community from:
📩 The Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia
📩 The Hon. Dr. Anne Aly MP, Federal Member for Cowan

These letters reflect the deep respect for the contributions our community makes to a harmonious society.

May the light of the Dhamma shine brightly in your hearts and homes this season.

Happy Vesak to all! 🙏🌸

We were blessed to meet the fabulous Director Marta GYÖRGY-KESSLER. Her incredible attention to detail bringing together years of archival footage, artwork and interviews to tell the story of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje—the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism it’s truly remarkable - we learnt of the Karmapa’s incredible presence, the rituals still practiced today and what lead many of his followers to see him as a “Living Buddha”. The film traced his early years in Tibet, his preservation of the lineage in exile in India, and his vision to spread Buddhism to the modern world. Most inspiring was his deep commitment to bringing Buddhism to the west and his nurturing of Lama Ole and wife Hannah - from recognising their devotion as young hippy seekers on the search for freedom to wizened teachers. This film was seven years in the making with an enormous cast of helpers! Marta, the kindness, love and commitment you showed in making this film is truly inspiring!
