Anti-Poverty Week is almost over for 2026, but of course we can all take action every week of the year.

I was pleased to be one of many people interviewed by Alex Hughes of No Place for Poverty to help raise awareness, and consider what might be done to make things just a little easier for those people experiencing poverty.

We look forward to welcoming the Archbishop of York, the Most Reverend Stephen Cotterall to Perth!

Everyone is welcome to St George’s Cathedral to hear Archbishop Stephen preach at a special Synod Eucharist on Friday 16 October at 6.30pm and again on Sunday 18 October at 10.00am.

Other highlights of the visit include a day in beautiful York on the Avon River, and meeting students and staff from some of our AngliSchools network.

This week is Anti-Poverty Week and a timely reminder of some of the confronting statistics in π‘‡β„Žπ‘’ 2026 π‘ƒπ‘œπ‘£π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘‘π‘¦ π‘†π‘›π‘Žπ‘π‘ β„Žπ‘œπ‘‘: π‘‡β„Žπ‘’ π‘β„Žπ‘Žπ‘›π‘”π‘–π‘›π‘” π‘“π‘Žπ‘π‘’ π‘œπ‘“ π‘π‘œπ‘£π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘‘π‘¦ 𝑖𝑛 π‘Šπ‘’π‘ π‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘› π΄π‘’π‘ π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘Žπ‘™π‘–π‘Ž put together by the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre and released in partnership with Anglicare WA, No Place for Poverty, and WACOSS.

* 15.1 per cent of Western Australians are living in poverty in 2026 (1 in 7 people and 1 in 6 children) – that’s more than 450,000 people, and above the national average
* Almost 45,000 children are experiencing deep poverty.
* Poverty is increasingly affecting households experiencing housing stress, including private renters, single-parent families (mostly mothers) and people living alone, particularly older women.

I was pleased to meet with Alex Hughes of No Place for Poverty recently and participate in their discussion with a series of different people about what might be done to address the worsening issue of poverty in our community. Watch this space for a link to some of that discussion later this week.

Bishop Matt and his wife Rachael will move from Bendigo to Bunbury, with a very warm and prayerful Western Australian welcome awaiting.

The Dean of St George's Cathedral, The Very Rev'd Chris Chataway represented the Diocese of Perth today at the laying up of Bishop Garry Weatherill's Pastoral Staff and farewell service in Ballarat.

Chris is a former Dean of Ballarat and he was joined by other Perth clergy including the Rev'd Elizabeth Smith.
