๐ŸŒŸ A New Chapter for Social.Justice.Church ๐ŸŒŸ

As of the end of May 2025 - and after much prayer, reflection, and conversation - weโ€™ve concluded our Friday Night Fellowship services. Thank you to everyone who journeyed with us. Your presence, prayers, and commitment to justice have meant so much.

Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll all agree that our final gathering under this initiative marked a meaningful close to this season of shared worship and community.

Looking ahead, weโ€™re returning to our original name: Social.Justice.Church - an initiative of the Uniting Church in the City, and part of the wider Uniting Church in Australia.

Rather than regular worship services, weโ€™ll now focus on justice-focused events held in partnership with other groups.

Weโ€™ll share details about upcoming events here on Facebook and via Mailchimp - so stay tuned, and make sure you're subscribed!

With gratitude and anticipation,

The Social.Justice.Church Team

National Sorry Day, observed annually on May 26th, is a day to acknowledge and remember the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, a period known as the "Stolen Generationsโ€.

This is a time to listen, reflect, and acknowledge Stolen Generations Survivors while recognising the role we all play in truth-telling and healing.

Together, we stand in solidarityโ€”honouring the past, acknowledging lived experiences, and committing ourselves to a future built on justice and reconciliation.

This is a Yokai Healing our Spirit and Bringing Them Home event.

Where: Stolen Generations Memorial, Moort-Ak Waadiny (Wellington Square, East Perth)
When: Monday 26 May from 11am โ€“ 2pm

There's only one week to go until our March Friday Night Fellowship service at Wesley in the City!

This month we are very excited to have Rev Dr Cathie Lambert delivering our sermon. The topic is Bringing the Feminine out of the Shadows, and is in honour of International Women's Day (March 8th).

Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope to see you there.

Our Vision for a Just Australia: Foundation 5 โ€“ An Inclusive and Equal Society

This foundation is grounded in the view of humanity promoted by the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. But this view does not translate into reality, as we live in a society where:

โ€ข social and economic disadvantage is often determined early.
โ€ข there are high levels of family violence,
โ€ข and many people are disenfranchised and discriminated against due to faith, cultural background, ability, age, and gender identity.

This is not aligned with the idea that we all are bearers of Godโ€™s image (Gen 1: 26 โ€“ 27) or that we should live in a community where hierarchy and favoritism is absent (Galatians 3: 28, James 2: 1 โ€“ 9). It is up to us to challenge the status quo that favors the few at the expense of the many. Our work is the work of reconciliation and renewal, which is the mission of the body of Christ in our world.

Please accept my apologies everyone, this was meant to go up last night.

On the 7th of March the Uniting Church Calendar of Other Commemorations honours third century Christian martyrs Perpetua and Felicity.

Hailing from North Africa, the story of Perpetua and Felicity was recorded in one of the earliest Christian texts, the Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicity. Written from the perspective of Perpetua, this manuscript is a diarised account of her imprisonment and martyrdom along with her slave Felicity, who was said to be pregnant at the time.

The story recounts that their deaths occurred during public games in a Roman amphitheatre alongside three other Christian companions, Revocatus, Secundulus and Saturninus.

In some circles, Perpetua and Felicity are considered to be patrons of same-sex couples. More information about this can be found in a fascinating article online at Q Spirit: https://qspirit.net/perpetua-felicity-same-sex-couples/

You can also find an English version of Perpetuaโ€™s diary at the Internet History Sourcebook Project website from Fordham University: https://sourcebooks.web.fordham.edu/source/perpetua.asp
