It's official! The 54th International Eucharistic Congress will be held in Sydney, Australia, in 2028!
The announcement was made overnight Sydney time at the closing Mass of the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress in Quito, Ecuador, by the Pope’s Legate, Cardinal Baltazar Porras Cardozo.
2028 will mark one hundred years since Sydney hosted the 29th International Eucharistic Congress in 1928. Melbourne hosted the 40th International Eucharistic Congress in 1973.
One of the resolutions of the Plenary Council of the Catholic Church in Australia in 2022 was to request from the Holy See that an International Eucharistic Congress be held in Australia again.
The Archbishop of Sydney, Most Rev. Anthony Fisher OP is in Quito for the Congress there, accompanied by Sydney Auxiliary Bishops Richard Umbers and Danny Meagher and a group of priests and laity from the Sydney Archdiocese.
The Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney, Fr Don Richardson, said this morning:
“I heard early today the exciting confirmation from far way Quito that the Church in Sydney will host the 2028 Eucharistic Congress. I’m sure the Congress will be a very special time for us here and will nourish the faith-life of Sydneysiders, Australians and the world. Back in 1928, St Mary’s Cathedral was at the heart of the Congress, and no doubt will be so again in 2028 when we welcome the Catholic world to the Mother Church of Australia. Let’s pray that the world will be at peace then, so that people from every nation and culture can gather here to encounter Christ with us.”
More details to come!
