Ridley Centre for Children's and Youth Ministry A ministry of the gospel by the whole church among children and young people.

The Ridley Centre for Children’s and Youth Ministry (CCYM) functions as a community of practice, bringing students together with researchers and practitioners to equip, enable, and energise one another in the work of serving the church through gospel ministry among children and young people. The Ridley Centre for Children’s and Youth Ministry (CCYM) understands children’s and youth ministry as a m

inistry of the gospel by the whole church among children and young people.

- As a ministry of the gospel, CYM preaches Christ as Lord, engages children and young people within and beyond the church with Scripture, and aims for children and young people to express and grow in their personal faith in Jesus.
- As a ministry of the whole church, CYM recognises families as church, the church as family, aims to connect children and young people with believers across the life-span, and strives to see children and young people take their place in the life of the church.
- As a ministry among children and young people, CYM honours children and young people AS children and young people, taking seriously their developmental and cultural distinctives for how they hear and live out the Christian faith.

From Adrian Blenkinsop In a world where the Christian faith is less of a serious option for our young people, wouldn’t it be good to know what helps young people to move ahead on strong, resilient faith journeys? And what… Continue Reading →

tonight I (Graham Stanton) got to present research with my learned colleague, Dr Rowan Lewis at the ANZ regional conference of the IASYM - The International Association for the Study of Youth Ministry
We have different temperaments, different ways of approaching the research task, different modes of working, different gifts we bring to the project. But gosh, it's good working together; and our work is so much better from the collaboration.
So Rowan, thanks for driving us to be better, and for the privilege of being part of an excellent team.

Today was the first meeting of the Melbourne Diocese Children’s and Youth Ministry Working Group - established by Archbishop in Council to develop a proposal for a Diocesan office to effectively plan for, resource, and support growth in the number of children and young people involved as active disciples in the parishes of the Diocese of Melbourne.
Will you pray for us?
Us being Bp Kate Prowd, Brian Holden (Diocesan Youth Ministry Consultant), Helen Petering (GFS/KidsPlus+ and St Alfreds Blackburn North), Elizabeth Breakey (Bellarine Gateway), Moe Win Tun Kin (Werribee Karen Congregation), Ivy Lau (North Richmond), and me (Graham Stanton, Ridley and St Judes Parkville).

Rory Shiner makes a strong case for teaching children to memorise poetry and scripture: https://quadrant.org.au/magazine/2021/07-08/on-the-memorisation-of-poetry-in-childhood/
The question for us is, are we confident enough in the traditions of our faith to help our children commit things to memory? 'That which we are prepared to teach our children before they can consent is that which we truly believe'.

Children no longer memorise poems. This is odd. Children, after all, are seemingly purpose-built for memorisation. Their ability to acquire languages, memorise stories, and reel off vast reams of data is well attested. The classical education trivium of grammar, logic and rhetoric reflects this. The...

Good news from the Melbourne Anglican Synod this weekend. A motion to establish a broadly based Children’s and Youth Ministry Working Group to review current strategies and opportunities to Make the Word of God Fully Known amongst the next generation of young people in the Diocese of Melbourne, and formulate a proposal to include in the 2023 budget a fully funded Diocesan office to effectively plan for, resource, and support growth in the number of children and young people involved as active disciples in the parishes of the Diocese was passed overwhelmingly 99% in favour.
Now the hard work begins: Pray for the first members of the Working Group: Graham Stanton, Brian Holden, Helen Petering, and Elizabeth Breakey as they begin consulting with children's and youth ministry leaders across the Diocese.
