A Memorial Run Message
Scripture: James 4:14 — NKJV “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a v***r that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” Good morning everyone. Today we have gathered together for something that is very special to us. We're here to remember people we once rode with. People who sat beside us at the clubhouse. People who rode beside us on the highway. People we shared laughs with, meals with, rallies with, and miles with. Some of them we may have known for years. Some we may have only known for a short time. But they became part of our riding family. And today, as we get on our bikes and ride in their memory, I want us to stop for a few minutes and think about something that we don't always like to think about. Our own mortality.
THE ROAD REMINDS US HOW VULNERABLE WE ARE
There is something about riding a motorcycle that reminds you very quickly that you're vulnerable. When you're sitting in a car, you've got steel around you. You've got airbags. You've got seatbelts. You've got a roof over your head. But when you're sitting on a motorcycle, there isn't much between you and the road. You feel the wind. You feel the weather. You feel every bump. And you know that one mistake—ours or someone else's—can change everything in a moment. Every one of us who has ridden for any length of time has probably had a moment when we've thought: “That was close.” Maybe someone pulled out in front of you. Maybe a car didn't see you. Maybe you came around a corner faster than you should have. Maybe the road was wet. Maybe an animal ran across the road. And you thought afterward, “That could have been me.” And sometimes, sadly, it was someone we knew. That's why today isn't just about remembering those who have gone before us. It's also about recognizing something: We are not guaranteed another ride.
WE DON'T KNOW WHEN OUR LAST RIDE WILL BE
The Bible says in James 4:14: “You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a v***r…” Think about that. A v***r appears for a moment—and then it's gone. We make plans. We talk about the next ride. The next poker run. The next holiday. The next bike we're going to own. The next modification we're going to make. We say, “I'll see you next week.” But none of us actually knows that we'll be here next week. The people we're remembering today who passed away on the road probably didn't wake up one morning thinking: “Today is going to be my last ride.” They probably had plans. They probably had things they wanted to do. They probably expected to come home. But life can change in a moment. And that's why memorial rides like this are important. Because they remind us that life is precious.
REMEMBERING THOSE WHO ARE NO LONGER WITH US
When we ride today, don't just remember how they died. Remember how they lived. Remember the sound of their bike. Remember their laugh. Remember the stories. Remember the times they helped you. Remember the times you rode together. Remember the person they were. And as we ride to the Dugandan Hotel, perhaps take a moment and think: “If they could speak to me today, what would they say?” Maybe they'd tell us to enjoy the ride. Maybe they'd tell us to look after one another. Maybe they'd tell us not to take our time together for granted. And perhaps they would tell us something else: “Don't wait until you're lying in a hospital bed or standing at the end of your life to think about where you're going.”
THE QUESTION WE ALL HAVE TO ANSWER
Jesus asked a question in Mark 8:36: “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” That's a powerful question for every one of us. We can spend our whole lives building things. We can have a beautiful home. A good job. A great motorcycle. Money in the bank. Friends. Reputation. We can travel thousands of kilometres. We can collect memories. But eventually every one of us is going to leave this world. And when that day comes, none of those things will matter. The question won't be: “What bike did you ride?” It won't be: “How much money did you have?” It won't be: “How popular were you?” The question that matters is: “What have you done with Jesus Christ?”
GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN US
The good news today is that God doesn't want us to live our lives frightened of death. He wants us to know Him. Jesus said in John 11:25–26: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” That's the hope of the Christian. Death doesn't have to be the end. Because of Jesus Christ, there is the promise of eternal life. The Bible tells us that every one of us has sinned. Romans 3:23 says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Every one of us needs God. It doesn't matter whether you're a preacher or a biker. It doesn't matter whether you've been going to church your whole life or you've never stepped inside a church. It doesn't matter what you've done in your past. Jesus Christ died on the cross for you. And Romans 10:9 tells us: “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” That's not a promise from a motorcycle club. It's not a promise from a church. It's a promise from God.
TODAY, WE RIDE FOR THEM — BUT WE ALSO RIDE FOR OURSELVES
So as we leave here today, we're going to fire up these motorcycles. We're going to pull out onto the road. And for a while, we're going to ride together. But I want you to look around during this ride. Look at the bikes beside you. Look at the brothers and sisters riding with you. Because every one of those people is valuable. Every one of them has a family. Every one of them has people who love them. And every one of them has a life that can change in an instant. So watch out for one another. Don't ride angry. Don't ride recklessly. Don't take unnecessary chances. Give each other room. Look after the rider beside you. Because we don't know which ride might be our last.
ONE DAY, SOMEONE WILL RIDE WITHOUT US
There will come a day when our bike won't be in the garage. Our helmet will be sitting somewhere. Our riding gear will hang untouched. Our friends will talk about the rides we went on. And somebody may gather together to remember us. That's a sobering thought. But it doesn't have to be a hopeless thought. Because the Bible says in Psalm 90:12: “So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” To number our days doesn't mean we sit around worrying about dying. It means we understand that our time is valuable. It means we stop putting off the things that matter. If you need to tell someone you love them—tell them. If you need to make things right with someone—make them right. If you've been putting God off—don't put Him off anymore. Because none of us knows how many more mornings we're going to wake up. None of us knows how many more times we're going to throw a leg over that motorcycle. None of us knows how many more times we're going to hear that engine start.
YOUR LAST RIDE
So today, as we remember those who are no longer riding with us, I want to leave you with one question. Not a question about your motorcycle. Not a question about your club. Not a question about your reputation. But a question about your eternity. If this were your last ride… would you be ready to meet God? Don't answer that question for the person standing beside you. Answer it for yourself. Because one day, every one of us will stand before God. And God has already made a way for us to be ready. His name is Jesus Christ. So today we remember those we've lost. We honour their memory. We ride in their honour. But perhaps the greatest way we can honour their memory is to live our own lives differently because they are no longer here. Don't waste your life. Don't take your family for granted. Don't take your brothers and sisters for granted. And most importantly, don't take GOD for granted.
CLOSING
Before we leave, let's remember those who rode with us. Those who shared the road with us. Those whose names we still speak. Those whose bikes we still remember. And let's thank God for the miles we were privileged to share with them. But as we start our engines today, let's also remember: This ride is not guaranteed. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Our next breath is not guaranteed. But through Jesus Christ, eternal life is offered to us. So ride carefully. Ride together. Look after one another. Remember those who have gone before us. And if you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, don't wait for another ride to make that decision. Because none of us knows when our last ride will be. Let's pray. Father, We thank You for the lives of those we remember today. We thank You for the friendship, the laughter, the miles, and the memories we shared with them. We ask You to comfort the families and friends who still feel their absence. As we ride today, keep every rider safe. Give us wisdom, patience and awareness on the road. But Lord, more than anything, I pray that You would speak to every heart here today. Help us to understand how precious life is. Help us to number our days. And if there is someone here who doesn't know You, I pray that today they would consider the condition of their soul and turn their heart toward Jesus Christ. Thank You for sending Your Son to die for our sins and for the promise of eternal life through Him. We place this ride, these riders, and this memorial in Your hands. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
