St Peter To Rot of Papua New Guinea, pray for us.

Today we honour our close neighbour Papua New Guinea’s first saint: the devoted husband, father and catechist, Peter To Rot.

As Pope Leo XIV reminded us at St Peter’s canonisation last year, Peter To Rot offers us an inspiring example of steadfastness and fortitude in preaching the truths of the Gospel when confronted by difficulties and challenges, even threats to our lives.

Although a humble catechist, Peter showed extraordinary courage by risking his life to carry out his apostolate in secret because his pastoral work was prohibited by occupying forces during the Second World War.

When these same occupying forces permitted the practice of polygamy, St Peter To Rot firmly defended the sanctity of marriage.

May we continue to draw inspiration from Peter’s defence of the truths of the faith, even at the cost of personal sacrifice. Saint Peter To Rot, pray for us!
