Aldersgate Day: The Flame That Still Burns

Today, we celebrate Aldersgate Day in the Methodist Church — a day set aside to recognize and honor the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in the history of our movement and the shaping of its future. It marks a pivotal moment, not only for one man but for an entire tradition of faith, mission, and revival.

On the evening of May 24, 1738, John Wesley, a young Anglican priest, attended a small gathering on Aldersgate Street in London. While someone was reading from Martin Luther’s Preface to the Epistle to the Romans, something extraordinary happened. In his own words, Wesley recorded this powerful moment in his journal:

"In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther's preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

It wasn’t just a doctrinal truth for humanity in general — it became deeply personal for Wesley in that moment. He came to realize that Christ died not merely for the world, but for him personally. That single experience was the spark that ignited what we now know as the Methodist revival — a movement marked by passion, social action, spiritual awakening, and a deep hunger for the presence of God.

Why does this matter today?
It reminds us that Christianity must move beyond being a concept we admire to becoming a reality we experience. The Gospel is not simply a message for the masses — it is a personal invitation to each heart. Without personal transformation, there can be no lasting communal revival. The Methodist Church was, and must remain, a church of awakening — a people kindled by the fire of the Holy Spirit, marked by warmth, conviction, and the unmistakable presence of God.

So today, as we remember Aldersgate Day, let us commit to rediscovering our past so we can more fully embrace our identity in the present. May this be a spark for our congregations and communities — a fresh call to be a people of passion and action, carrying the flame of the Spirit into a world desperately in need of renewal.

Happy Aldersgate Day!
Let the flame be rekindled in us today.
