Loving and merciful God,

The psalmist reminds us that you are our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.

We come before you with heavy hearts, deeply troubled by the violence and suffering we have witnessed.

Today, we lift before you Dr Helen Haines, her husband Phil, their family and all who love her. Be near to Helen, loving God.

We pray for your healing presence, for strength through the difficult days ahead, and for wisdom and skill for those caring for her.

Surround Phil and their family with your love. In their pain and uncertainty, may they know they are not alone.

We remember the Wangaratta community, in particular the Wangaratta Cluster Uniting Church, and all who have been affected by this attack. Bring comfort to those who are grieving and peace to those who are afraid.

God of justice and peace,

We pray for our nation and for a world troubled by violence, conflict and division.

Forgive us when our words or actions have caused harm, when we have failed to listen, or forgotten the dignity of those with whom we disagree.

Give us courage to speak truthfully, to stand against injustice and to seek peace without turning against one another.

In Psalm 46, you call us to be still and know that you are God. In the midst of so much uncertainty, help us to trust in your presence and not lose hope.

Risen Christ, you came to your disciples in their fear and said, โ€œPeace be with youโ€. Lord, we need that peace today.

May your peace be with Helen and her loved ones, with our nation and with all those across the world who live with fear and violence.

Through your Holy Spirit, strengthen us to be peacemakers in our homes, our churches and our communities.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our hope and our peace.

Amen.

The Uniting Church in Australia stands with the people of Wangaratta and continues to hold Helen Haines MP, her family and loved ones in prayer.

In moments of violence and grief, our response must be grounded in compassion, dignity and peace. We pray for Helen's recovery, for strength for her family, and for a community spirit that rejects hatred and division.

At 8pm (AEDT) on Friday, light a candle at your front door, beside a window, in your garden or on your verandah, and stand in silence for fifteen minutes.

This is not a political gathering. It is a simple act of compassion.

As people of faith, we pray for Helen's recovery, for strength and comfort for her family, and for peace for all those impacted by this distressing act of violence.

Together, let us bear witness to a different way. We choose kindness over cruelty, compassion over hatred, and peace over violence.

We join the Catholic community around the world in praying for Pope Leo XIV during his illness and recovery.

Uniting Church President Rev Charissa Suli offers a prayer for healing, strength and peace, and for all those caring for him. Together, we also hold in prayer everyone in our communities who is sick or hurting.

As part of the wider Christian Church, we share in one anotherโ€™s joys and struggles, united in Christ through faith, hope and love.

Please join us in prayer. Read the Presidentโ€™s reflection and full prayer below.

The United Nations International Day of Peace, commemorated on 21 September, brings people around the world together to reflect on the urgent work of building and sustaining peace.

The 2026 theme, โ€œInvest in Peace โ€“ For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Dayโ€ highlights that peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is shaped through everyday actions that strengthen safety, dignity, cooperation, dialogue and community. The United Nations is recognising the โ€œeveryday architects of peaceโ€ who work in neighbourhoods, classrooms and communities to build a more peaceful future.

For Christians, the day is an opportunity to pray for a world where peace, justice and reconciliation can flourish, and to consider our own calling as people who follow the Prince of Peace.

Uniting Church President Rev Charissa Suli offers this prayer for the International Day of Peace, inviting us to join with people around the world in prayer for peace and for those working to build it.

As communities across the Uniting Church mark the day, may our prayers remind us that peace is not simply something we hope for, but a calling we live out through our relationships, communities and witness.
