A new heritage walking trail brochure, will be launched today, on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWI. The brochure provides a guide to sites in Orange that commemorate local residents who fought in the conflict. 4th August 1914 is the day the war began and commemorations are to be held around the world to mark the centenary.

“Around 1,800 service men and women from the Orange District enlisted in the First World War,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “This was at a time when Orange’s population was around 7,000 people.”

The brochure includes a walking trail map which begins at the Visitor Information Centre and is estimated to take about 45 minutes to walk to each of the sites located close to the city centre. In total there are nine key points of interest in the brochure: Sir Neville Howse Memorial, Cenotaph Robertson Park, Holy Trinity Church Steeple, Soldier’s Memorial Hall, Memorial Avenue - Bathurst Road, Lone Pine Memorial, Orange General Cemetery, Gateway Park and Newman Park.

The brochure is available from the Orange City Library and the Orange Visitor Information Centre.
