Easter Saturday

The usual artwork associated with Easter is either situated around the dark suffering of the first Friday, or the bright victory of the first Sunday.

This painting by Hans Holbein The Younger is the first Saturday, The Dead Christ in the Tomb.

It depicts the original hopelessness of this moment. No hint of resurrection. No hope of restoration. No anticipation of victory.

A very stark depiction of death and sadness and silence.

Easter Saturday is the day in between.
The Disciples have gathered together in fear about what’s about to happen.
The Religious, Political and Military leaders are meeting together to ensure the tomb is secure.
It’s a day when the stench of death is still in the air.

I wonder if your life feels a bit like Easter Saturday.
The sadnesses, hurt, bruising and hate has happened.
You trust that good will come of it.
But you’re stuck in the silence of the in-between.
Waiting. Hoping. Needing. Trusting.

The Easter Saturday’s of our lives are hard.
But Resurrection Sunday is coming.
And that changes everything!
