Holy Trinity Church to Close.
Holy Trinity Anglican Church has stood in its present site in Roberston St since 1887.
Since that time it has served Nathalia and the surrounding districts well, both as a place of regular worship and as a setting for special occasions such as baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals and a host of community celebrations. Over the years, members of successive congregations have organised and been greatly involved in community events including Deb Balls, Fetes, Town Markets and Street Stalls. The Anglican Strawberry Festival is a standout, beginning in 1908 and running for over 100 years.
Once a parish in its own right, with churches also at Narioka, Waaia, Yalca, Barmah and Wakiti Creek, it became part of the wider Numurkah-Nathalia Parish in 1998 due to ongoing financial concerns. The Numurkah-Nathalia parish now covers almost the entire the western half of Moira Shire.
Unfortunately, as with many churches in towns right across the country, attendances have decreased over the years. At present there are only 4 regular worshippers, and the responsibility of financing, caring for and maintaining the church, the hall and their surroundings has become a significant burden.
At a Parish Council meeting late last year, attended by both Bishop Clarence Bester and Archdeacon Meliassa Clark, the members of the congregation voiced their concerns and made the difficult decision to set in progress the steps that will lead to the closure and deconsecration of the church. As part of this process, a community information meeting will be held at the Holy Trinity Hall on Tuesday 24th February at 10:30am.
