🧶✨ Crafter of the Week: Meet Irene! ✨🧶

This week we're celebrating Irene from our Bay & Basin Craft Group — a long-time crafter who loves exploring and trying all sorts of different creative pursuits! Over the years her talents have taken her from Heirloom Bear making, to scrapbooking, to jewellery making — just a few of the many endeavours you can see in her photos.

Irene is also a very proficient sewer, having created countless garments for family and friends, including handmade pyjamas for her grandchildren. In recent years, she's been inspired by the creative ideas she's discovered through YouTube, and loves seeing how younger generations of fellow crafters create in lots of new and interesting ways. Irene's willingness to embrace technology and learn from younger crafters is inspiring in itself — a lovely reminder that technology can be a valuable teaching and inspiration tool, for any age!

Since joining Bay & Basin Craft Group, Irene has not only blessed us
with her presence but she has also blessed the group by making and gifting the group members with their own material craft bags, along with small zipped bags for bits and pieces like scissors, pins, measuring tapes etc. Now the group proudly comes to Tuesday craft carrying their very own "Irene created" bags! It's clear that Irene loves using her skills to create things that bless others.

When asked what she loves about Tuesday craft, Irene said it's the
friendships and conversations that happen around the crafting tables. 💛

🙏 Celebrating Faithful Leadership at SCUC

This Sunday, our Bay and Basin congregation gathered in celebration as Ann and Marie were recommissioned as Elders of Shoalhaven Central Uniting Church - continuing a remarkable 25 years of faithful service to our SCUC family and beyond.

Rev Grant Bilbey led us in worship, preaching from Exodus 1:18–2:10, drawing our attention to the faith, steadfast courage of the midwives Shiphrah and Puah in defiance of Pharoah’s command, and later Miriam and her mother who, in the face of another decree of Pharoah, saved the life of the baby who would become Moses. Their quiet leadership following God’s call was a symbol of faith for a depressed people and highlighted the importance that God sees of the leadership of women and men. Their leadership wasn't loud or public but led to God bringing life to all people.

It was a fitting backdrop for this moment of thanksgiving for two of our women leaders. Ann and Marie continue to live out their Eldership roles with humility and steadfast commitment. We give thanks for Ann and Marie, and for all the women and men across our congregation who continue to answer God's call to leadership. 🙏🙏

🧶✨ Crafter of the Week: Meet Iris! ✨🧶

We are so proud to introduce our very first Crafter of the Week — the wonderful Iris, who is 98 years young and about to celebrate her 99th birthday! 🎉

Iris has knitted hundreds of beanies for charity, with a passion that began through the "Hats for Homeless" project. Since then, her generous hands have kept going — her beanies (and small blankets) have found their way to the Shoalhaven Homeless Hub, the Shoalhaven Cancer Clinic, tiny newborns in the Maternity Ward, and KOGO (Knit One Give One) — and she even offers her beanies to folk attending our Free Monday Community Lunch.

When we asked Iris what she loves about creating and attending Wesley Craft, she shared that folk her age can feel limited in what they're able to do and contribute — but knitting beanies for charity gives her life purpose, and a purpose that makes a real difference. She also treasures the friendships, conversations, and fun that Monday craft brings.

Thank you, Iris — we are inspired by your compassion and your commitment to sharing your gifts so meaningfully. 💛

🧵✨ Introducing: Crafter of the Week! ✨🧵

Did you know our Shoalhaven Uniting Church family is full of enthusiastic crafters? Across our Nowra, Bay & Basin, and Bomaderry Craft Groups, our crafters knit, sew, and create beautiful items — many of which go on to bless others through the Shoalhaven Homeless Shelter, the Cancer Treatment Centre, KOGO (Knit One Give One), and loved ones near and far.

Starting soon, we'll be shining a spotlight on one of our crafters each week — sharing a bit about what they're making, why they love it, and who's lucky enough to receive their handiwork.
