ANTISEMITIC TERRORISM HAS REACHED AUSTRALIA AND CHRISTIANS MUST SPEAK OUT, CHURCH LEADERS SAY

The terrorist attack on members of Sydney, Australia’s Jewish Community on the eve of Hanukkah celebrations is the latest appalling example of antisemitic violence around the world, and all people of faith must denounce it.

According to recent media reports, 11 people were killed and at least 10 other people seriously injured, including 2 police officers and a child.

“Bondi Beach is an iconic tourist destination in Australia and a place where tourists, families, and our community gather and feel safe,” said Rev. Elder Stuart Sutherland, of Sydney. “This is a devastating attack on us as Australians, and for those out celebrating Hanukkah. At this devastating time, our MCC churches in Australia and around the world embrace the Jewish community and hold them in prayer after this disgraceful attack.”

"This kind of light cannot be extinguished by hatred and gunfire,” said Rev. Elder Karl Hand, also of Sydney. “There is no place for antisemitism in Australia! To every Jewish person living in Australia, and to anyone who was impacted by this appalling attack on Australia’s beautiful Jewish community, we stand with you."

“Like all people of good will, we grow weary of denouncing violence at every turn,” said Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston, moderator of MCC churches around the world. “Hatred, racism, nationalism, and antisemitism are unfortunately all too familiar, and we must continue to stand up, speak out, and shout for an end to it, no matter its origins.

“Our shared faith heritage with the Jewish people compels us, and our shared humanity with all people demands that we do what is necessary through more than just prayer,” Eggleston said. “We must continue to demand policy changes, support righteous law enforcement, and embrace all people as equal children of God.”

The European Union’s highest court has ruled that same-sex marriages must be respected throughout all member countries registered in the EU.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that all EU member states were obliged to recognise a same-sex marriage between two EU citizens, including countries that previously didn’t recognise marriage equality.

The case covers a Polish couple who married in Berlin in 2018 before deciding to move to Poland. Polish authorities refused to accept their marriage certificate.

While many EU countries recognise same-sex marriages, others such as Poland, Hungary and Slovakia do not.

In its ruling the ECJ made clear that domestic laws would not have to be changed to recognise same-sex marriages, but member countries “were required to comply with EU law in exercising that competence”.

Everyone deserves to have their love - and their humanity - recognised in law. While there is more work to do this is a major step forward for the EU 🏳️‍🌈
