Cafechurch Melbourne

Cafechurch Melbourne Deconstruct and Reconstruct your faith with us. We value authenticity, real questions, and honest discussion over a beer or two.

Cafechurch was founded in 2000 with a simple brief: to be the sort of church we would like to be part of. We are a place where we can help each other in our spiritual quest, to drink from the deep wells of our faith, to be our real selves, exploring together what it means to be an authentic, thoughtful, humorous Christian in 21st Century Melbourne. This can involve asking some hard questions of our faith, confident that what is true will not only survive, but come out stronger and better for it.

Dear Friend of Cafechurch Melbourne. It has been a long, strange trip, but the time has now come to merge this account with our new home of Northcote Uniting Church.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our community in all its many incarnations and locations, and we ask for your prayers as we start on the next stage of the journey which God is summoning us to!

You can read about this new stage here: http://northcote.unitingchurch.org.au/history-of-cafechurch

I will be making this change in the next few days.

The community which re-founded Northcote Uniting Church in 2019 was known as Cafechurch. This is a very short summary of their history.

Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly. Matthew 15:28 What do we make of this strange story? What does it tell us about Jesus, about God, about ourselves?

Then the man said, "You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed." Genesis 32:28 To be a Christian, to be a disciple, is to wrestle with God. What does that mean for our faith? What does that mean for our day-to-day l

What does it mean to live a “meaningful” life? How does it relate to the idea of a “worthy” life?

On the principle that the weirdest, most alarming stories from the Bible are generally the ones with the most to teach us, we are going to be very brave and read the story of the time Abraham almost sacrificed Isaac. It seems a story that is not only alarming, but also completely alien to our world. Is there anything life-giving, or even useful, in it at all?

Join us on at Northcote Uniting Church - Chalice on Tuesday 4/7/23 at 7pm for dinner as we get stuck into this knotty, but maybe lifegiving, discussion.

Given we can never talk to much about grace, this Tuesday night we will explore the story in Genesis of the call of Abraham and its on-flow of grace that we can all receive.
