Thanks to Reconciliation Australia for highlighting that National Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day, today, June 3, are a reminder to be ‘All In’ to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to commit ourselves to reconciliation and the fight for First Nations justice in Australia.

The final day of National Reconciliation Week every year is one of the most significant in Australia.

Mabo Day, celebrated annually on 3 June, commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful advocacy to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius, or ‘land belonging to no-one’.

Following the High Court’s Mabo decision, Australia’s Federal Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 which established a legal framework for native title claims throughout Australia by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

and Mabo Day are a reminder to be ‘All In’ to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to commit ourselves to reconciliation and the fight for First Nations justice in Australia.

National Reconciliation Week 2026

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following images may contain deceased persons.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn more about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. The theme for this year’s National Reconciliation Week is “All In,” a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

Many religious walk alongside First Nations communities and we can all learn from their collective heart and dedication to a united future.

Today Pope Leo XIV released his major encyclical on artificial intelligence titled “Magnifica Humanitas”. Pope Leo XIV’s call to place human dignity at the centre not only of technological advances, but also of economic and social development, is one of the major highlights of his first encyclical.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we remember the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken from their families, communities and cultures as part of the Stolen Generations.

We acknowledge with sorrow the role members and institutions of the Church played in these injustices and the ongoing pain and trauma they have caused. As Catholic Religious Australia, we recommit ourselves to truth-telling, listening, healing and walking together in the spirit of justice and reconciliation.

An invitation during this Laudato Si' Week: Through the ‘Beyond 10,000 for 10’ initiative, CRA and Catholic Earthcare are inviting all school communities to be part of a simple yet powerful action: planting trees together!
More details below.

📢 Call to Action: Sowing the Future with School Tree Planting 🌱💚

Are you connected to a school community that’s looking for their next step in caring for our common home? Through the ‘Beyond 10,000 for 10’ initiative, CRA and Catholic Earthcare are inviting all school communities to be part of a simple yet powerful action: planting trees together!

During 2025’s World Day of Prayer for the care of creation, Pope Leo XIV reminded us that every seed we sow in caring for creation matters. Together, “by working with love and perseverance, we can sow many seeds of justice and thus contribute to the growth of peace and the renewal of hope” (Pope Leo XIV).

This year, Australian Catholic University, in partnership with Catholic Mission, formation.org.au, and the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, will release HOPE: Unfinished Business, a powerful book featuring reflections from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic women on hope, healing, and renewal.

Inspired by the Jubilee Year of Hope, the publication brings together the voices and lived experiences of ten Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who reflect on faith, identity, reconciliation, survival, and intergenerational trauma through storytelling, prayer, art, and personal reflection.

On Wednesday, 27 May, a special launch event will take place at the Reconciliation Church in Phillip Bay, where guests will have the opportunity to meet some of the authors and hear directly from their stories of hope and resilience.

If you would like to know more or register for the event, visit www.catholicmission.org.au/hope-unfinished-business.
