Pope Leo XIV has reflected on the Church’s mission of evangelisation, encouraging the faithful to continue sharing the joy of the Gospel in everyday life.

Marking 60 years of the Neocatechumenal Way, he gave thanks for the many communities that have helped people encounter faith in a personal and life-giving way.

He highlighted evangelisation as a shared calling of the Church, not just through words, but through witness, friendship, and lives that reflect God’s love.

“It is important to remember… that the evangelising mission is a fundamental task of the whole Church. With joy and humility, seeking the unity of all her members and docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church is called to bring the gift of salvation to everyone.”

A reminder that the message of the Gospel continues to be shared and renewed wherever people live their faith with openness and joy.

Congratulations to Bishop-elect Anthony Corcoran SJ on his appointment as Bishop of Kyrgyzstan.

Since 29 August 2017, Bishop-elect Anthony has faithfully served as Apostolic Administrator of Kyrgyzstan, home to one of the smallest Catholic communities in the world. His appointment as Bishop marks a significant milestone for the Church in Kyrgyzstan and reflects his years of dedicated service to the faithful and the wider community.

While his episcopal ordination is yet to take place, we join in celebrating this important moment and keeping him in our prayers.

Through Bishop-elect Anthony's leadership and support, lives have been transformed both in Kyrgyzstan and beyond. In 2025, with the generosity of our supporters and his encouragement, Catholic Mission was able to assist Sprig Kindergarten, helping provide nourishing meals, caring teachers and the support children need for a strong start in life.

We are deeply grateful for his commitment to mission, faith and service. As he prepares to begin this new chapter of ministry, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and prayers.

May God continue to bless Bishop-elect Anthony as he serves the people of Kyrgyzstan with compassion, humility and hope.

A precious moment filled with Hope for the future, tied to the past: His Holiness Pope Leo received the recently published book HOPE: Unfinished Business, fulfilling a wish expressed before her unexpected passing, of Aunty Louise Campbell, a deeply loved and respected Aboriginal Elder.

Peter Gates, Catholic Mission’s National Director, placed the book into Pope Leo’s hands and shared with him the wisdom, courage and hope that Aunty Louise Campbell lived with. She was a proud Gumbaynggirr country woman, mother, grandmother and educator and passed away soon after submitting her article entitled: 'From the Embers we rise: A journey of Hope, faith and culture'. She is one of ten Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who shared their stories of hope in the book.

"I explained the purpose of the book and shared Aunty Louise’s wish with him," said Peter Gates. "It was just a few moments, but I hope she is smiling."
As Reconciliation Week 2026 concludes, we now look forward to remembering the 40th anniversary of John Paul II’s address to the Aboriginal People in Alice Springs in November.

“Dear Aboriginal people: the hour has come for you to take on new courage and new hope,” were the words of John Paul II during that historic address. This work of HOPE remains Unfinished Business, to which each person must respond.

Catholic Mission and formation.org.au, in partnership with Australian Catholic University’s Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Indigenous), highly commend this book as an essential tool for dialogue and formation. It is a privilege to walk alongside the authors and communities connected to this journey, and to play a small part in supporting this new chapter of hope, healing and reconciliation.

During these weeks, representatives of the Pontifical Mission Societies from around the world gathered in Rome for the General Assembly, an annual gathering that plays a vital role in discerning the future direction of the Societies and identifying priorities for the years ahead.

Simone Medri, Catholic Mission's Director of Communications and Digital and Coordinator of the International Commission on Communication, Faith-Fundraising and Digital Transformation, had the privilege of presenting the communications campaign and centenary theme logo for the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday. The material was received warmly by delegates from across the globe.

"Mission today also passes through communication, digital spaces and shared storytelling. At the General Assembly, we had the opportunity to reflect on how the Pontifical Mission Societies can work together globally - not by replacing local realities, but by strengthening them through communion, collaboration and shared purpose," shared Simone.

This campaign is the work of many hands. Supported by the Australian Communications and Digital Team at Catholic Mission, and developed in close collaboration with colleagues from national offices around the world, it is itself an expression of synodality in action as ideas, experiences and perspectives woven together across countries and cultures, reflecting the truly global nature of our mission.

"The campaign would not have been possible without the contribution of so many people. It is a reminder that mission is something we do together, each person offering their gifts in service of the Mission of the Church," shared Simone.

As a personal highlight, Simone had the extraordinary blessing of a personal encounter with Pope Leo XIV, gifting him the cap and t-shirt bearing the centenary theme design. He also personally presented Cardinal Tagle with the commemorative pin featuring the campaign logo - a small but meaningful token of the shared work being carried forward across the global Church.

Yesterday, a group of faithful supporters gathered at ACU North Sydney to hear from Lawrence Gigliotti, Director of Programs at Catholic Mission. Lawrence shared about the current situation in Myanmar and the hope being fostered through education.

Having recently joined a panel discussion at Xavier College alongside His Eminence Cardinal Charles Maung Bo SDB and His Eminence Cardinal Mykola Bychok CSsR, Lawrence shared insights into the efforts of the local Catholic Church to provide child-centred education in the Archdiocese of Yangon. The Sacred Heart Education (SHE) School stands as a powerful example of this commitment, helping young people access quality education and opportunities for the future.

Videos from the students at the school, and from Fr Salai Michael MSP, brought these stories to life, offering a glimpse into the impact of this work on the ground. The presentation sparked thoughtful discussion, with many attendees eager to learn more about the school, Catholic Mission’s long-standing partnerships in Myanmar, and the broader mission of the Church in Myanmar.

One attendee shared that she was deeply impressed by the work of the local Church and by the pride the students and staff expressed when speaking about their school.

It is thanks to the generosity and solidarity of our faithful supporters that we can continue walking alongside our sisters and brothers in Myanmar, helping provide the education, support, and opportunities they need to grow, thrive, and build a brighter future.

“The whole Myanmar Church made education a priority."

Through the support and guidance of Cardinal Charles Maung Bo SDB, the Archdiocese of Yangon has prioritised education as a cornerstone of its pastoral mission.

Projects such as the one led by the Missionaries of St Paul provide children from vulnerable backgrounds with safety, access to nutritious food, education, and hope for a brighter future through St Paul’s boarding hostel and ecological farm.

As National Reconciliation Week begins across Australia, a special gathering took place at the Reconciliation Church in Phillip Bay, NSW, where community members came together in a yarning circle to celebrate the launch of HOPE: Unfinished Business.

Co-created by Kelly Humphrey, Dr Lisa Buxton, and Lana Turvey-Collins, the publication shares the voices and lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic women reflecting on hope, healing, faith, and renewal.

More than a book launch, the gathering became a space of listening, storytelling, and connection, reminding all present that reconciliation is a journey we walk together.

“While the book is titled HOPE: Unfinished Business, to me, being here today, and hearing the stories we have shared, feels like a step towards finishing that unfinished business,” shared an attendee.

Developed in partnership with Australian Catholic University, Catholic Mission, formation.org.au and the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, the publication stands as a powerful contribution to the ongoing work of reconciliation within the Church and wider community.

Each year, we observe Reconciliation Week, 27 May to 3 June. It is an invitation to learn and reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to continue exploring how, together, united, we can contribute to achieving reconciliation. This year, the theme of National Reconciliation Week is “All In”, a call to encourage everyone to take action and contribute to positive change.

This week also commemorates the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision, both of which are significant milestones in the journey of reconciliation within Australia. “All In” reminds us that advancing the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples isn’t a passive process, but something that we all have an active part in.
