As a testament to Rev. Dr Jione's impact on the community, large attendance numbers are expected at the Centre for Ministry on this day.

Please note that parking on-site is limited. There is an overflow carpark across the road from the Centre for Ministry, but we ask for attendees to consider carpooling if possible.

This may also mean there will be standing-room only for the service, so those with mobility issues may find this challenging.

We thank everyone for their understanding as we gather to celebrate Rev. Dr Jione's life and legacy.

The United Theological College (UTC) community acknowledges with deep sorrow the sudden passing of Rev Dr Jione Havea.

Jione was a teacher, mentor, provocateur, and friend to UTC and the wider Uniting Church Synod of NSW/ACT. As lecturer in Old Testament from 2000 to 2014, Jione shaped the biblical thinking and formation of many ordained and lay-people within this synod and beyond. His groundbreaking scholarship raises up Tongan, Pasifika, and Moana interpretations of the Bible and theology, always as an advocate for justice and with invitation for others to find their own theological voice. Jione genuinely listened to these diverse voices, building up the ministry and thinking of his students, colleagues, and communities.

His legacy of teaching, mentoring, critique, and generosity will continue to impact UTC and the discipline of biblical scholarship. As the UTC community, we offer our love and prayers to Jione’s wife Monica and their daughter Diya in this time of grief.

Friday 24 April marks 111 years since the start of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, where authorities carried out the systematic destruction of Armenian Christians resulting in the devastating deaths of approximately 1.5 million people between 1915 and 1923.

This year is also 11 years since the Uniting Church formally recognised this tragedy as genocide during the 14th Assembly in July 2015.

A very proud moment for United Theological College this week, as three Candidates for Ministry graduated at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.

(L to R): Lucy Earl – Master of Arts (Theological Studies), Seini Taufa – Master of Theology, and Michaela Antill-Cassie – Bachelor of Theology (with Distinction).

It was a meaningful time of celebration shared with family and each other. We’re grateful for their commitment to their studies and their ministry formation and pleased to mark this significant milestone alongside them. 🎓

Today, United Theological College hosted a research Colloquium with a difference!

50 people gathered to hear from a panel of practitioners, including Dr Armen Gakavian, Dr Joel Hollier, Rev. Dr Karina Kreminski, Rev. Dr Steve Taylor and Dr Tanya Riches who shared their lived experiences of faith and ministry at the “edges” – those spaces that have traditionally been marginalised in the Christian context.

There was great discussion around the importance of the edges in a community and what can we learn from the experiences, practices and reflections of those working at the edges of ministry.
