Daily Bible Reading with Adrian McClymont I am a retired pastor, keen to help with reading the Bible and answering questions.

2 Pet. 3:15-18 We should regard the delay in the Lord’s coming as giving us time to share the Good News with others.

This message of Peter’s agrees with what Paul has said in his letters. Not only did Peter know of Paul’s letters, he knew their contents, and, he regarded them as Scripture, God’s word.

Finally, Peter condenses his message in a few words as he ends this letter.

True growth in our knowledge of Jesus will result in the grace of Jesus being exampled in our lives. Doing this will firmly establish us in Jesus, who will be the measure by which false teaching will be identified.

May we grow in the grace as seen in Jesus as we learn from him more and more. This will honour Jesus.

So ends our daily travel through 2 Peter. It also ends my time here for a few days. I go into hospital to have my right kidney removed together with the cancerous lesion that is attached to it.

When I get home and feel up to it, I'll begin again.

The Lord bless you all!!

2 Pet. 3:8-14 Jesus’ promised return will occur according to his timing, not ours.

For us, it appears that Jesus’ return is somewhat delayed, but this is because he wants to give everyone the opportunity to turn to him in repentance and faith.

When Jesus returns, it will be as unexpected, like when a thief breaks into a home unexpectedly. The fire of his judgement will at that time consume everything in this world.

We are not to hope for a rejuvenated world but a new world with new heavens where God’s holy character reigns.

So, in the meantime, what is our purpose? It was given to us just before Jesus left this earth; “Go and make disciples of all the nations” (Matt. 24:19).

May we example God’s peace and character as we share the Good News with others.

2 Pet. 3:1-7 Peter reminds his readers, and us, of the importance of wholesome thinking and the ability to recall the Scriptures. God’s prophets pointed to Jesus and the apostles pointed back to Jesus and his commands.

The last days will have scoffers who mock the promise that Jesus is coming again as though it is a promise forgotten.

These scoffers forget that God made the world by His command forming the land from the waters. With those same waters, God destroyed the ancient world and now is keeping the present world for fiery judgement. Then the ungodly will be destroyed.

May we take God’s word to heart, to read it often and obeying the commands of Jesus, for they are for our benefit.

2 Pet. 2:17-22 Peter has spent a lot of time warning about false teachers, their motives and their lives. Power, s*x and money are the unholy trinity that characterise false teachers.

The truth that we are “a slave to whatever controls you” (v. 19) tells us that we will live by a code of some sort.

If it is the code for sin, then that will control our way of life. If it is the code of holiness that we receive from Jesus, then that is the code by which we will live.

The most serious warning Peter gives is this. If someone were to embrace Jesus and receive deliverance from a life of sin, then return wholeheartedly to a life of sin, then they are worse off than before coming to Jesus.

Such a warning is hard to contemplate. Nor is it a warning we can use to pass judgement on someone else.

The horror of such a warning is something that we are to take personally, that we might consistently follow Jesus and be captive to him.

May we take these warnings to heart by becoming thoroughly immersed in the Bible, God’s Word, that we might know God, following His teaching including our promised future.

2 Pet. 2:12-16 Peter continues his warning about false teachers.
They don’t have any understanding of the truth but scoff at the truth, teaching their lies instead. The uncertain will be attracted to their teaching and dragged away.

Money is their primary motive together with their wandering eyes. They have no shame.

God will destroy them for their evil ways, for that is their reward.

We should drink deeply of the truth of God’s word, letting it saturate every part of our being.

May God’s word be the standard by which we measure the truth, for God’s word is truth.

2 Pet. 2:4-11 God’s final judgement is one from which there is no appeal. Yet it is a judgement that is not careless causing co-lateral damage. It is judgement that is precise applying only to those who deserve His judgement.

It was only the angels who sinned, Noah’s world, and S***m and Gomorrah that God judged. God protected and rescued Noah and Lot from His judgement.

We must remember that it is God Who passes judgement. God’s angels do not pass judgement on blaspheming beings even though they are superior to them.

God’s judgement is God’s alone. We are called to give evidence of His grace and mercy by the lives that we live.

May our lives, by how we live and by how we speak, consistently mirror the life of Jesus.

2 Pet. 2:1-3 Just like Israel who had false prophets among them, it will also be like that in the church.

Their teaching will be cleverly crafted but is false just the same.

They will deny God, not directly but cunningly. Their motive will be for money, more money - your money.

Because they take to themselves the name, Christian, outsiders will react by saying, “If that is what a Christian is like, then we want nothing to do with Jesus.”

In this way, all followers of Jesus are judged to be like these false teachers. In this way, they bring shame on the name of Jesus.

Those who are godly are forced to bear this accusation – persecution that has its origins from within the church.

Even though others bring shame on the name of Jesus, may we bear that disgrace without hatred, but letting our godly lives be centred on Jesus.

2 Pet. 1:12-21 We are to remind ourselves frequently of God’s promises and His purpose for our lives, for we can be distracted so easily and so forget.

Peter emphasises how he and others were eye-witnesses to Jesus, his coming, his passion and the Father’s voice confirming His Son.

This experience gave Peter all the courage he needed to spread the Good News concerning Jesus. We too must pay close attention to the words of the prophets for their message was not their own.

It was God’s message, revealed to them by the Holy Spirit, and so they wrote it down.

May we pay close attention to God’s Word, to read it carefully and frequently, taking to heart God’s promises, God’s warnings, and also God’s hope for us.

2 Pet. 1:10-11 Because of Jesus, we have received all of God’s promises. Some of these promises relate to the future but we know that they will be fulfilled.

Other promises have been partially fulfilled now for the received Holy Spirit is a down payment for all that we will one day receive.

One day, our salvation will be completed and therefore fulfilled when we are in the very presence of Jesus!

In view of all this, we are to serve God diligently knowing that His present work in our lives continues. God’s work in us now is that we might grow in the various graces (vv. 5-7) that will make us more and more like His Son, Jesus.

Living this way will grow our faith in Jesus, confident and strong.
The entrance into God’s eternal Kingdom will be so majestic and splendid to those who have chosen this path for their lives.

There is benefit now in living to please God. His path for us and His promises to us are completely reliable.

Is there a spiritual song that inspires you? Carry that tune in your heart today as a song of gratitude to him who has saved you by his grace!

Daily Bible Reading – 2 Peter

2 Pet. 1:1-9 Peter writes his second letter to those who have been given a just and upright standing before God – to us!
Peter prays that we might take advantage of that standing before God and grow in our knowledge of God and Jesus.

We need to notice this, that God has given us everything we need for godly living. Everything!

We have God’s promises – promises that He will never leave us or forsake us, promises that we know He will bring us to His home! What other promises can you think of?

As we live in these promises, we are able to escape the pitfalls of this world by overcoming our old nature.

Our new nature is to grow in moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, patient endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and lastly but importantly, love for everyone.

As we grow in these qualities, we will become more and more useful in serving Jesus.

May our gratitude for God’s promises be seen in our willing obedience.

1 Pet. 5:6-13 Peter concludes his letter with three important points.

Firstly, we are to live without conceit trysting ourselves and our reputation to God. He will listen to all that troubles us for we can trust Him with our troubles.

Secondly, we are to be aware of Satan’s desire to trap us and destroy our faith.

Thirdly, we can withstand Satan by being sound in our faith for this give us the strength to stand against him.

The truth is, that God has called us to share in His eternal glory which Jesus has won for us. Suffering is not unexpected but always remember that God will have the last say over our lives.

By His power, He will walk with us in our troubles and, as He has promised, He will bring us home!

Since God has promised never to leave or abandon us, let us live each day with confidence and with our assured future.

1 Pet. 5:1-5 The one characteristic that is for elders and the young men is godly humility.

Peter doesn’t promote himself over others but comes alongside.

The responsibility given to Peter is the same as that given to the elders that he addresses – care for those who are growing in their faith.

This is to be done with a caring heart, a heart that desires to please God, a life that others can imitate.

For young men, godly humility will mean accepting the authority of older men and serving others willingly.

We are to remember that God opposes the egotistical and gives His approval to those who are modest and unassuming.

May we serve the God of our salvation in such a way as to gain His approval.
