We are a welcoming Orthodox community. Our temple is the first Orthodox church in Tasmania, and today it is home to a vibrant multicultural congregation worshipping primarily in English, with Serbs, Russians, Australians, Greeks, Macedonians and Orthodox Ethiopian families. Our parish serves beyond Hobart,, with pastoral care, weddings and funerals in the north and northwest of Tasmania. We have
communicants from all around Tasmania, and our mission is to serve and support Orthodox Christians in Tasmania and to share Orthodox Christianity. Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco said that the Russian Church Abroad was scattered across the globe to share the light of Orthodoxy, and we seek to nurture those who see the grace and life of Orthodoxy
His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas is our new First Hierarch, following the desth of Metropolitan Hilarion (Kapral) of blessed memory. His Grace Bishop George is Bishop of Australia & New Zealand. Our Dean is the Very Reverend Dr. Michael Protopopov AM, who served as Rector from 1973- 1994 and from 2001 to 2021. Tasmania's only English language Orthodox Church is the Russian Orthodox temple dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is part of the southern Deanery of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad(ROCOR). Built in the post-war emigration, this church was where Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian and Greek emigres worshipped in Hobart. Orthodox Christians from all backgrounds contributed to building our domed church. The parish's founding priest, Mitred Archpriest Theodore Borishkevich served from 1949 until his death in 1972.
