We were delighted to welcome the Right Rev'd Susan Hinemoa Wallace (Bishop of Te Hui Amorangi ki te Waipounamu, the Māori Anglican Church in the South Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand) to preach at evensong tonight.

Te Waipounamu is one of five pīhopatanga, or episcopal units, that comprise Te Pīhopatanga o Aotearoa, the Māori Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

An extraordinary celebration this morning giving thanks for Bishop Chris McLeod’s ministry as National Aboriginal Bishop. The Stolen Generation Cope, a gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, was presented by the Most Revd Dr Ric Thorpe, Archbishop of Melbourne, and blessed by the Primate, the Right Revd Dr Mark Short. Before the Blessing, the Revd Aunty Di Langton presented Bishop Chris with a carved Walking Stick to accompany him on his onward journey. Thanks be to God.

The Anglican Board of Mission Australia has launched an appeal to provide relief and recovery assistance to survivors of the flash flooding disaster in Nepal. You can make a donation via the link below.

ABM AID has launched an appeal to provide relief and recovery assistance to survivors.

On 27 August 2026, a wall of water came roaring down from the Himalayan Mountains into central Nepal. It engulfed everything in its path: houses, bridges, schools, livestock … and people.

As of midday 28 August, 389 people are confirmed dead in Nepal and three dead in neighbouring Tibet (China). More than a thousand people are still missing, among them at least 113 Nepali and 466 foreign tourists, including 35 Australians. Thousands more are displaced or cut off as roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure was swept away.

ABM AID will channel funds raised through Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance, a global ecumenical coalition of Christian organisations – with a presence in Nepal – dedicated to helping when there’s an emergency.

Given the catastrophic scale of the emergency, international support will be required, particularly for emergency shelter, food, water, sanitation and hygiene, health, protection, family tracing and psychosocial support.

Please give generously. Those affected in Nepal need your help.

Tomorrow, Saturday, at 3.00pm - an afternoon of chamber music and choral music: Haydn's "Seven Last words of Christ" accompanied by choral reflections, with a sublime string quartet led by Helen Ayres. With the choirs of Queen's College, Melbourne, and our own St Peter's Cathedral Choir.

On Saturday 5 September at 10 am, there will be a special Thanksgiving Eucharist for the ministry of Bishop Chris McLeod as National Aboriginal Bishop. Bishop Chris has fulfilled this ministry since 2015.

The preacher will be the Right Rev'd Dr Mark Short, Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia.

As part of the celebration, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council NATSIAC will receive an extraordinary gift from the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Stolen Generation Cope (pictured) was commissioned in 2022 from leading UK artist Terry Duffy following a visit to Australia by the then-Archbishop of Canterbury. Duffy has created a number of unique garments which bear witness to major landmarks of human endurance, tragedy, and moral courage across global history.

The Cope will be presented and blessed by the Most Rev'd Dr Ric Thorpe, Archbishop of Melbourne, representing the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Today the Anglican Church commemorates the Martyrs of New Guinea – 12 Anglican Martyrs performing missionary work during World War 2 who gave their lives for the sake of the Gospel. They all had the opportunity to retreat as war drew closer, but all decided to stay and continue their work.

Lilla Lashmar from Adelaide lived in Prospect and is commemorated with a devotional niche, a stained glass window and a Cross of Sacrifice in St Cuthbert’s Church, Prospect.

The 12 Anglican Martyrs, remembered as a "light shining in the darkness" for their courage and sacrifice, are just a very small number of the Christian workers who were killed in New Guinea during World War 2.

‘Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.’ - John 12:25-26.
