A Word in Time
Are you a Jesus follower?
The words “Follow me” are seen 20 times in the Gospels according to the English Standard version. In most cases these words are spoken to an individual. As I read all 20 verses, the words seem to echo in my head, and as the words bounce back sometimes, they sound like an invitation and at other times they are like a command. Perhaps they are a commanding invitation.
What do you think?
There are two examples where Jesus spoke “Follow me” to a group. The first 3 people, Simon, Andrew and the brother of Simon:
• And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become
fishers of men.” Mar_1:17 These three fishermen acted, “And
immediately they left their net’s and followed him.” Mark 1:15.
A little further on the same invitation was given to James the son of
Zebedee and John his brother, they too immediately followed Jesus.
Mark 1:20. There were no discussion’s, if’s, but’s or maybe’s, without hesitation they became “Jesus followers.”
The question is, why did they follow Jesus without hesitation?
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL OF GOD, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; REPENT AND BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL.” Mark 1:14-15
The word “Follow” has this meaning in Strong’s Concordance:
• The foundational word in union being on the same road, going the same way and the word itself means: “to follow Jesus, join Him as His attendant, accompany Him.”
I like this: “Join Jesus as His attendant and accompany Him.”
For years I thought I was a Jesus follower, but I was not His attendant and did not accompany Him. I was too busy accompanying my own ideas, aspirations and ego. I am still tempted to be independent but “my own conscience and thoughts accuse me” (Romans 2:15) and I respond quickly with an about turn.
A “Jesus follower” will join Him as His attendant, accompany Him.
