Happy Feast Day to our Parish.

St. Anthony,
patron of our parish,
loyal servant of God,
faithful follower of Jesus:

You taught by word and deed,
the message of the Gospel.

Teach us to live the Gospel
values as you did.

Enlighten our minds in search
of God's will.

Inspire us to be a
prayerful community,
ever reaching out to
and cherishing our neighbour.

Help us proclaim God's love
and live what we proclaim.

AMEN.

Today is the memorial of St Peter Damian, a Benedictine monk and reformer of the Church. Born in 1007 in Ravenna, Italy, from a young age Peter displayed an eager desire to live an ascetical life. He was a major player in the 11th century reforms that the popes tried to implement, purging the Church from its attachment to worldly goods. For Peter, the Cross was the central Christian mystery: ‘Those who do not love the cross of Christ do not love Christ,’ he wrote.

He was also a lover of literature, of poetry, and of beauty. According to Pope Benedict XVI, St Peter Damian thought of the universe as a ‘parable’, a cosmos of symbols through which we can perceive the divine life and understand our own inner life.

He was also a brilliant theologian. In fact, one of his ideas is mind-blowing in its spiritual implications. In one of his letters, Letter 28, which is a treatise on the Church, St Peter Damian writes that the bond of love that unites the Church is so strong that ‘just as she has many members, so is she, mystically, entirely contained in a single member.’ In other words, we are not simply individual members of a global communion, but the entire Church is present in us as individuals. To serve an individual in the Church is to serve the whole Church.

Let us pray today that St Peter Damian will intercede for us, not only that we may live holier lives but that we will become aware of the mystical bond of love that unites us all as a Church.🙏

Please keep these deacons in your prayers as they prepare to be ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Melbourne. God-willing, they will be ordained on Saturday 11 September at St Patrick's Cathedral. We give thanks to the Lord for their “yes”! 🙏🏼 The ordination Mass will be broadcast live on our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/archmelb) and via free-to-air TV on Community Channel C31 (channel 44 on digital TV).

'The priest is called to match the fiat of Mary at all times, allowing himself to be led by the Spirit as she was. The Virgin will support him in his choice of evangelical poverty and will prepare him to listen humbly and sincerely to his brothers and sisters, that he may recognize in the drama of their lives and in their aspirations the "groans of the Spirit" (cf. Rm 8:26).' —St John Paul II
