Guided by Naomi Cooper and Jack Fitzgerald Sice of Sydney Alterna Choir, the group will scramble along the craggy a ca****la escarpment and up the harmonious heights to gaze loftily at the earth below from the summit of song. New singalong venue tonight!

Friends, we’ve just heard from the Carlisle Castle Hotel that they have double booked our singalong with a jazz band!
We have just secured the wonderful Petersham Bowlo and their piano, very obligingly at very short notice.

Time: from 5:30pm
Place: Petersham Bowling Club, 77 Brighton St, Petersham
This is a short walk from Petersham station, not far from buses on Parramatta Rd or there is street parking nearby.

Bookings are open for Join the Dots: Rhythm Music Reading 101 Workshop!

When: Sunday 26th October, 1:30-3:30pm
Where: OWN Newtown Wellness Centre, 8-10 Victoria St, Newtown

If you've wondered what all the dots and squiggles on the sheets we sometimes use at choir mean, or you'd like a refresher because you haven't read music since school, this workshop is for you!
While we love teaching by ear and have no plans to stop doing that ever, many of you have asked for the low-down on the mysteries of music notation, so we're here to unveil as much of it as we can for you in a way that is most useful in the context of choir.

For this second instalment of our Join the Dots series we will be focusing on RHYTHM. The groove, the beat, the thing that makes you wanna tap your foot and have a little dance.

You’ll come away knowing:
✅ how time signatures work
✅ how long each note goes for
✅ strategies to help with counting rhythms
✅ how your body is your best rhythmic friend

It will be a fun, interactive workshop with your trusty choir leaders and music nerds Jack and Naomi. There will be singing, there is bound to be laughter and there will of course be tea! In this rhythm edition there will almost certainly be not-to-be-missed dance moves from Jack.

Everyone is welcome, whether you come to Alterna regularly or not. You don't need to have attended any previous workshops to come to this one: this is rhythm 101!

Rates:
Early bird: $35 full/$25 concession
Regular: $45 full/$35 concession

We are still buzzing from a wonderful weekend of singing with beautiful humans in Newcastle last weekend!!

A huge thank you to Naomi and Chris at Rasa Lila Community Arts for creating the kind of space that musos like us DREAM of and that allow us to bring what we do to the community. The hall's acoustic was possibly our favourite ever of the rooms we have led choirs in: it made 30 people sound like 100 from the moment we sang the first notes and blended everyone's voices wonderfully into a delicious choir smoothie!

Thanks to the beautiful souls who joined us for our first Newcastle Sing Summit. It sounds like we need to come back, pronto and we can't wait!

Thanks to everyone who came along to our Join the Dots: Music Reading 101 workshop today!!

These legends learned how to find their part and follow it through various notation formats, discovered how clefs work and why they’re useful, decoded the symbols and instructions that help us navigate through a song without getting lost, and explored scales and key signatures.

People said “that was a revelation” and “I never realised that”. 😍

There is lots more to learn and it’s always helpful to have the opportunity to practise new skills so…..

One more week until Alterna is back for term 3!! 🎶💃🏼

The start of term is a great time to join. We'll have brand new repertoire, as well as some golden oldies.

We love welcoming new members and you don't need any experience to join. We know everyone can sing, even if you don't think you're very good, we'll show you how fun it can be with a group of awesome humans ☺️

Singing is a great way to spend chilly Winter evenings because we can be cosy and warm inside and will share a cup of tea and tasty treats in the break.
