* Attention*
Just a reminder that the council elections are this Saturday (4 December).

Voting is compulsory. Polling is open from 8am to 6pm.

Importantly for Tighes Hill residents, there will be no polling booth at the Tighes Hill Public School.

The closest polling booths for us will be either the Islington Public School or the Tighes Hill TAFE Campus (Building D).
You need to enter via the back of building D - See map. You can access the TAFE by car from Chinchen Street, turn right just before the railway bride.

For other polling booths in this Ward (Ward 1), go to:

https://www.elections.nsw.gov.au/Elections/Find-my-electorate/Councils/Newcastle/Ward-1

Please spread the word in the community that Tighes Hill Public School will not be a polling booth in this election.

You can also pre-poll before the election, at various locations around the local government area.

Due to COVID, how-to-vote cards will not be handed out outside polling booths, and voters are being asked to bring their own pens.

The Tighes Hill Community Group has made a submission to Council about the proposed DA at 57A Henry Street. It will be discussed at the Council meeting tonight

If you're interested in watching the meeting at 6pm on zoom either live or as a recording afterwards, the link is here: https://newcastle.nsw.gov.au/council/about-council/council-meetings/webcast-of-council-meetings

Our position is that the proposal is not in keeping with the general look and feel of the surrounding character of Tighes Hill.

For almost 20 years Council has acknowledged that the character of our suburb should be protected. They are finally putting together a Character Study for Tighes Hill, but in the meantime, problematic DAs are continually approved by council staff.

We are drawing a line in the sand.

We're not anti development. There are some fantastic new buildings and renovations in our suburb that are respectful of the housing around it.

There are many regulations that currently guide the height, size, windows and many other aspects of new or altered buildings. We think the aesthetic character of the design is the missing piece of a good planning model.

We hope the Tighes Hill Character study will eventually deliver that for us, but until then, we will continue to oppose inappropriate developments like this one.

Ordinary Council Meetings and Committee Meetings (Public Voice Committee, Briefing Committee and Development Applications Committee) will be broadcast.
