Check out some of the photos from our last Health Club evening!
This month’s focus was on simple, healthy, and hearty meals, and Chanel demonstrated how to make Haystacks — a well-loved dish closely associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. While its exact origins are uncertain, it is believed to have come from the southern United States and became especially popular among Adventists during the 1950s because it is easy to prepare, filling, nutritious, and completely meat-free.
Why the name “Haystacks”? Think of a pile of hay stacked high in a field — only much tastier! 🙂 Layers of corn chips, beans, fresh salad toppings like tomatoes, olives, and cucumber, along with guacamole, salsa, and creamy toppings are piled together to create a delicious and colourful meal. During the demonstration, Chanel also showed how to make two quick and easy vegan cheese toppings to sprinkle on top.
We were also blessed to have our local RN, Susan, share an informative health talk on preventing common illnesses such as colds and flus using simple, natural, and inexpensive methods that can be very effective.
Everyone who attended enjoyed plenty of delicious food, laughter, and fellowship, while also gaining practical skills in healthy plant-based cooking and natural health principles — along with a new appreciation for the Adventist Church’s signature dish, Haystacks!
If you haven’t been to one of our Health Club evenings before, feel free to join us next time. Normally we meet monthly, but our next Health Club will be on July 2.
Until then, stay safe, stay healthy, and may God bless you all! 🙂
