Fasting Drives Away Doubt - a daily devotional from Andrew Wommack
BIBLE REF: MARK 9:28-29

Prayer and fasting do not drive certain demons out. If the name of Jesus and faith in His name won’t do the job, then fasting and prayer won’t either. Jesus is saying that fasting and prayer are the only ways of casting out this type of unbelief.

An unbelief that comes as a result of ignorance can be done away with by receiving the truth of God’s Word (Rom. 10:17; 2 Pet. 1:4). However, the unbelief that hindered the disciples in this case was a ‘natural’ type of unbelief. They had been taught all of their lives to believe what their five senses told them. They were simply dominated by this natural input more than by God’s supernatural input (God’s Word). The only way to overcome this unbelief that comes through our senses is to deny our senses through prayer and fasting.

Fasting accomplishes many things. One of the greatest benefits of fasting is that through denying the lusts of the flesh, the spirit man gains ascendancy.

Petition Not Repetition - a daily devotional from Andrew Wommack
BIBLE REF: MATTHEW 7:7-11; MARK 8:22-25

It was unusual for Jesus to inquire about the results of His ministry as He did in verse 23. It was even more unusual that Jesus laid hands on this man a second time. This is the only example in the New Testament where Jesus had to minister to any need more than once to affect a total healing.

Many people request things from God and then look at their circumstances to see if God answered their prayer. That is walking by sight and not by faith. If they can’t ‘see’ God’s answer, then they pray again asking for the same thing. This is not the way Jesus taught us to pray and receive. We can be certain that Jesus didn’t lay hands on this man a second time because He thought His Father hadn’t heard Him the first the time. Since the man received partial sight, it is evident that God’s healing power was at work in him. Jesus was not petitioning His Father again for healing.

Tradition Neutralises - a daily devotional from Andrew Wommack
BIBLE REF: MARK 7:1-13

Deuteronomy 4:2 clearly states ‘Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it . . . .’ This same thought is repeated in the New Testament in Revelation 22:18-19 with very stiff penalties. Religious man is very swift to observe the part about not diminishing any of God’s commandments, but there seems to be an unwritten law that adding to them is okay. Every denomination has its own set of ‘do’s and don’ts’ which aren’t found in scripture, and like those of the hypocritical Pharisees, their unwritten laws usually have to do with outward appearance.

We need to remember that adding to God’s commandments is just as bad as taking away from them. We need to speak when the Bible speaks, and be silent when the Bible is silent.

The commandments of God and the traditions of men are not the same thing and must always be clearly distinguished. Any attempt to place them on the same level will always result in making the Word of God of none effect. You have to either ‘lay aside’ the commandment of God to keep the traditions of men or you have to ‘lay aside’ the traditions of men to keep the commandments of God (Ex. 20:3).

John 4:18-20 reads, "For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."

Andrew Wommack comments on this passage of scripture, "Jesus was operating in a gift of the Spirit. And I tell you, if you are going to be effective ministering to a total stranger, now again, this can be different if it's a family member, if it's somebody that you work with and things like that. There are different ways to approach it, but I'm talking about approaching a total stranger the way that Jesus did. Man, it is so beneficial to have the gifts of the Spirit operating in your life.

Because of what it does, it shows that person you're talking to that this isn't just you that is talking to them. It's God talking to them through you because you are saying things to them that it would be impossible for you to know with just your own mental understanding. And when people recognise that it's God speaking through you, boy, that changes the whole thing.

See, now she recognised that she wasn't just talking to a physical man, but that God was speaking to her through this. And I believe that she began to come under his conviction.

So she tried to change it to a theological argument. Should we worship here, or should we go to Jerusalem to worship? This is what happens lots of times. You start talking to a person, and if they begin to get under conviction, they'll bring up some weird doctrine like, "Well, what about the people that have never heard of the Lord? How are they going to respond?"

But really, when you're witnessing to a person, you don't need to go there. You just need to say, "Look, let's not worry about them. What are you going to do? You've heard about the Lord. God is speaking to you through me." You keep the focus on them. You keep the light shining on them."
