Someone sent me a video of the band Heart singing Stairway to Heaven, and as I was listening to it, the opening words really got me thinking.

The song begins with the idea of a woman who seems to believe that somehow heaven can be bought.

And while most of us would never say that we can literally buy our way into heaven, I think it can be easy to fall into a similar way of thinking — that if we do enough good things, help enough people, go to church enough, give enough, or simply try hard enough to be a “good person,” then surely we have earned our place with God.

But the beautiful truth of the Gospel is this:

We cannot earn heaven. And we don’t have to.

None of us is perfect. None of us can make ourselves worthy through our own efforts. Salvation is a gift made possible because Jesus Christ, the Son of God, gave His life for us on the cross.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9

Does that mean our good works don’t matter? Not at all.

The very next verse reminds us that we were created in Christ Jesus to do good works. But those works don’t save us. They flow from a heart that has already experienced the love and grace of Jesus.

We don’t obey so that God will love us.
We don’t serve so that God will save us.
We love, serve and obey because He first loved us.

There is no amount of money, achievement, religious activity or good behaviour that can purchase a stairway to heaven.

Jesus has already paid the price.

And grace is a gift. ❤️
