As well as being very costly, a plebiscite on same-sex marriage has the potential of being extremely divisive. There is legitimate concern that this process will result in harmful and derogatory discourse, causing deep pain to our LGBTI brothers and sisters. Equality for all is essential, but this plebiscite is unnecessary. Allowing our parliamentarians a free vote will resolve this issue without the expense, pain and division a plebiscite will bring.
