"Carlo Acutis is a testament to finding God and beauty in our modern world amidst the noise. Despite his life being tragically cut short at such a young age, the difference he made in his short life offers tremendous hope to young people in our increasingly uncertain times. Through his acts of kindness and humility, his story reminds me that no matter your age or circumstances, you can be a light in this dark world, and the smallest of matches can spread like wildfire through surrender to God.
Acutis said, “Our goal must be the infinite, not the finite.” As a millennial saint, he is particularly relatable to us and understands some of our modern trials. He lived in the same world as us with rapidly changing technology. As a young person in a world that plunges into deeper cynicism and despair, his ability to incorporate his faith into the ever evolving world offers hope as we struggle to keep above the waters.
His faith was not separate from the world around him, but something that gave greater meaning to the way he lived in it.
Attending World Youth Day also gave me a powerful sense of how many young people are searching for the same fire, to be a light to the world in such a unique but despairing time in history. Carlo’s life reminds us that we do not have to surrender to the darkness around us. Modernity and its attributes can be used as tools. He was only a teenager, yet the small flame of his life continues to reach people he could never have known. Perhaps that is his greatest gift to young people today. It’s a reminder that we are not powerless in the face of a dark world, and beyond the screens, God is always waiting to give us the matches to bring back the light."
