Imagine you’re walking through the streets of Jerusalem just a few months after Jesus’ resurrection.
The city is bursting with life—pilgrims haggling in the markets, Roman soldiers marching on stone streets, families preparing for festivals, rabbis teaching in shaded courtyards.
And right in the middle of this noise and heat… a movement is being born.
Every morning, thousands of new believers stream toward the Temple—the beating heart of Jewish life. The Temple isn’t just a religious site; it’s the centre of identity, worship, prayer, and community. It’s where the whole city gathers. And there, under the long stone colonnades of Solomon’s Portico, the apostles teach with a power no one can ignore. People crowd in from every direction. What Luke describes is not casual attendance out of obligation.

He uses the word proskarterountes (pros-kar-te-RAY-oh)
They devoted themselves, persisted with intense effort, refusing to drift. They come hungry. Expectant.
This is their gathered worship, the large, public heartbeat of the movement.

But as the sun begins to set, something else happens.
All across the city, lamps begin to flicker in doorways.
Homes open. Neighbours call each other by name.
Small groups squeeze into living rooms, reclining on cushions, passing bread and wine, praying, singing quietly, sharing stories of what God did that morning in the Temple courts.

Luke describes this with the phrase kat’ oikon (cat-oh-con) “from house to house.”
Not one house. Not one special meeting.
A network of homes, spread like roots under the soil.
And the word Luke uses for what happens in those homes is koinonia (koy-nuh-NEE-uh) shared life, mutual belonging, a spiritual interdependence that turns strangers into family.

One rhythm: temple and table.
One identity: a people redeemed by Jesus.
One mission: to carry His presence into every street, every home, every relationship.

“Every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not stop proclaiming Jesus.” Acts 5:42

Around tables.

‘Roughly 43% of what we are shown about Jesus in the gospels happens at a table, in a home, or around food and hospitality.
Jesus teaches at tables. Confronts at tables. Forgives at tables. Welcomes sinners at tables. Loves His enemies at tables. Breaks bread with betrayers at tables. Reveals Himself after the resurrection at a table.
In Scripture, the table is never just furniture. It is a glimpse of the Kingdom breaking in here and now, where enemies become friends and strangers become family.’

This week we begin a new season.
The full expression of our Open Tables. Expanding out around meal tables in homes and community spaces then coming back together as the gathered church.

From the beginning, Liquid has been about Jesus changing lives and drawing people into His family. Spiritual hospitality – faith, food and friendships has been our DNA. Liquid church began in a home, had many community dinners in school and church halls, on the beach and pub dinners. While we’ve had different seasons and different shapes and sizes, this essence has always been there.

In Covid times, we were pushed to innovate. Unable to gather, we moved to Zoom. Sure, we could tune in to any church broadcast - information and content was widely available. But what we were starving for was connection.

Then, when we could only meet in groups of 10, we met in homes for church around the table. When restrictions eased we met in bigger gatherings, picnics around campfires and eventually all back together at Mount Martha community house.

But something had changed and we weren’t going back. For the years since, we’ve been experimenting, incubating and seeking God’s leading.

There was something powerful about gathering around the table – a sense of everyone having a voice, seeing other’s gifts, knowing each other better (and our pets and best recipes) - all around the tangible presence of God.

But we also knew that the bigger gathering, teaching and worship was important too. We wanted theological depth, structure and a variety of ways to learn and experience God together.

And we knew that for some, the break from rosters and huge Sunday commitments caused a silent sigh of relief. We wanted church to be simple but structured, refreshing and life-giving for everyone.

These days we’re more about rhythms, less about rosters. More about people, less about programs. Not ‘going to church’ but ‘being the church’. And ultimately, we want everyone to see everyone being transformed, growing in God and living out their faith in everyday life. To see everyone use their gifts - sometimes imperfectly but growing and encouraged in community.

We have rumbled, got real. We realised we can be unified in Christ and really quite different in many other ways. And how good that is.

In the last year, we got hungry. We knew that a new season was emerging but never wanted to get ahead of God. We prayed. A lot. Together and privately. We’ve had meaningful conversations, prayer and connections with the broader church local and beyond. We saw that God was moving in similar ways with this expression of church all around the world.

And we got brave. We knew it was time. So here we are. Gathered and scattered. A monthly rhythm and an invitation to take your seat at the table, or start your own table and be part of multiplying many open tables around the presence of Jesus.

Temple and table.
Gathered and scattered.
Worship and shared life.
Big moments of teaching and small circles of belonging.

This was the rhythm of the early church. The first gospel ecosystem - a movement alive with roots in the Word and Spirit, strong trunks in the gathered church, branches of community stretching into neighbourhoods, fruits of justice and discipleship, and seeds that would multiply into new leaders, new ministries, new churches.

This wasn’t a strategy. It was the natural overflow of people whose lives had been captured by Jesus.

This rhythm changed Jerusalem.
It changed the world.
And it can change our city, our neighbourhoods and families - if we step into it.

For the past couple of years our Liquid community have been experimenting how to live this out in this place, in this time. If you're interested, follow along and find out more.

We love sharing faith and food around a table, and we reckon God does too.

We’ve often named spiritual practices we felt are important to Liquid, our DNA if you will. Common responses included—dinners, hospitality, welcoming, inclusion, belonging, and creativity…summed up with the phrase ‘open table’.

From Abraham and Sarah welcoming three strangers to their table, to the Passover meal, Jesus’s first miracle and his last Supper - all these incredibly important spiritual moments in our story are around a table. Throughout the Bible, God encourages his people to welcome the stranger, the traveller, and the alien, for they knew what it was like to be strangers in a strange land. Jesus brought many diverse people together, often around tables, and the church in Acts continued in this way. Sometimes messy, unsettling, confronting even, but also fun, celebratory and meaningful. The picture of family gathered.

You come as you are, everyone has a voice, and everyone has a seat at the table. We share our food, our faith and our stories, our lives.

So for Term 4, this is what we are doing together. As we pray and plan and discern our path forward as a church, we feel that Open Tables are a great expression of what we have in our hands, and how we can refresh each other, and be refreshed for the week ahead.

WELCOME HOME

Liquid Church is a place to check out the Christian faith and connect with people just like you!

When you walk through the doors, our hope is you feel a strong sense of ‘coming home’ and are impacted by the community of Liquid and the presence of God. When we become part of the things that God is doing, He changes us. We begin to experience the amazing transformation that only God can bring and we start to live out the awesome God-given potential in each of us.

Community is the heartbeat of who we are. We’re a church that is passionate about gathering together on a Sunday, but constantly seek out opportunities to connect throughout the week. We were made for community, and so our vision is to see thousands of lives transformed for Jesus Christ…
