Psalm 27:14 (NKJV) “wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!”
If you look up another translation for this verse, e.g. the NIV, you will notice different phrasing. “Wait on the LORD” versus “Wait for the LORD.”
What can be said about this? Firstly, I think that both translations have something to offer. How?
When we wait FOR something, it’s all about expectation. Like the countdown to Christmas. Something good is coming! Hope in Jesus tells us that what is coming is better than what we have right now. We have hope. And with our church name being “Collective Hope”, hope means a lot to us!
By comparison, when we wait ON someone, it’s kind of like what we hear when a waiter is working in a restaurant. They wait on you. They take you to a table. They give you a menu. They tell you what specials are on offer. They take your order being sure to take note of any special food requirements. They bring the food to you… on it goes. They wait on you.
It seems to me that the Christian life is the blend of these two things. We wait for God to move. We wait for God to answer prayer. We wait for God to be God. And we wait on God. We serve Him by serving others in this hurting world. We serve Him with hearts that we want to ensure are pure in motive. Serving to make Him look good, and not just to make us look good.
Can I get an amen?
