Slave-trader wrote the most amazing song.

On Thursday 24 , many churches are celebrating the 300 anniversary of the birth of John Newton. John had a Christian mother, and a sea faring father, who did not believe. His mother died about 2 weeks before he turned 7. It was about 18 months before his father returned home. John’s mother had planted something of her faith in John, but with all the issues that went on from there, John slipped further and further away from God. He was always trying to make himself great and acceptable but ended up being rejected. Hatred grew in him, and this led him to break the rules. In his own mind, John could justify everything he said or did.

When he was 12, his father started him on sailing ships. After a couple of years John took leave, and didn’t return till after the ship had left. He became incarcerated and beaten regularly. He encouraged the captain to swap him with a person on another ship. He was exchanged, but when he became offensive to the captain, he was left on an island near Africa, where John was treated worse than the slaves, and some would slide food and water secretly to him. If caught helping him, they would be incarcerated too. After being released on to another ship, he returned to England and became involved in the slave trading ships.

When John came to faith, his life changed, and it showed in the way he lived. John’s ministry has been praised by all who knew him, confirming his following the fullness of faith. Like the Samaritan, he showed compassion and care, based on his relationship with God through Jesus. In his many letters, he always makes some comment about his own short comings, but also the abundance of God’s grace.

May we live in ways that show the world that we are under the rule and authority of Jesus.

Amen.
