🌟 Coming of the Light – 1 July 2026 🌟

Today, we acknowledge and honour Coming of the Light, a significant day for the Torres Strait Islander people.

On 1 July 1871, missionaries from the London Missionary Society arrived at Erub (Darnley Island), marking the beginning of Christianity in the Torres Strait. This day is remembered as a time when many Torres Strait Islander communities embraced the Christian faith while continuing to honour and celebrate their rich culture, identity and traditions.

As we reflect on this important occasion, we celebrate the strength, resilience and enduring faith of Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise the valuable contributions they continue to make to our communities across Australia.

May today be a time of thanksgiving, unity, hope and peace for all who commemorate this special day.
