🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we heard Jesus' stunning words about his relationship to God the Father. The 'sign' of Jesus healing the lame man on the Sabbath revealed his unique identity as the eternal Son, equal with God. Because he is the Son, he has authority to give life and authority to judge.

Jesus promises an 'hour' when all people will face him as judge. But the beautiful news of the gospel is that, for those who believe, this coming 'hour' has already fallen on Jesus. At the cross the one who is entrusted with all judgment, lets himself be judged in the place of his people, so that by faith we might have eternal life, covered by his righteousness.

This week's prayer:
Heavenly Father, you are always working, bringing all things under the lordship of your Son. Thank you for Jesus, equal with you in eternal glory. Thank you that by faith in him we have crossed from death to life. Make us joyful and bold sharers of this good news, for your glory and the salvation of many. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

🅣🅗🅘🅢 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we continue reading John's gospel, as Jesus continues his confrontation with the Jewish leaders in John 5:31-47.

🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we re-started our ongoing series in John's gospel, reflecting on the second 'sign' recorded by John at the end of chapter four. These signs point away from themselves to a far greater reality - the identity of Jesus. John records them so we might 'believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and the by believing you might have life in his name' (20:31).

The healing of the official's son in John 4 highlights a kind of belief that dishonours Jesus - a seeking after signs for their own sake, trusting in them and not the One they point to. But the passage also shows the life-giving faith of the royal official, who saw Jesus for who he is and, without seeing, took Jesus at his word.

As we prayed together on Sunday, let's continue to ask God to "grow in us a true, saving faith; a faith that takes you at your word, trusts in your goodness, and submits to your glory."

🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we read reflected on Paul's prayer for an abounding love, from Philippians 1:1-11. When our horizons are fixed on our past or our future, we are so easily driven by regret or pride, anxiety or fear. But when in Christ we look back by faith to the cross, and forward in hope to the glorious new creation, we are freed to live lives of love today. This gospel love abounds more and more; it's a love controlled by gospel knowledge, a love that takes wisdom, and a love that hearts righteous fruit, all to the glory and praise of God.

🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we read Paul's prayers for hope, from Romans 15. The God, Father, Son, and Spirit, is an inexhaustible fountain of hope. He has given us his word to teach us to hope, lifting our eyes to the big picture of his purposes in this world. And we anticipate that future by seeking God's glory here and now - his glory in the church, as we accept one another and bring praise to God; and his glory among the nations, as more and more people put their hope in him.

🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we started our short series reflecting on three of Paul's prayers for faith, hope, and love. Faith, a gift from the glorious father, receives and rests in God's grace in Christ. As we trust in his finished work on the cross, and in his victorious resurrection, faith roots and establishes us in the all-surpassing love of Christ.

May we increasingly grasp, and be grasped by, this love that surpasses knowledge! As Paul finishes off his prayer:

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we saw how a glimpse of God's glory transformed Moses, making his face radiant. It also transformed the people of Israel: having been restored to God through their mediator Moses, they whole heartedly and generously give to the work of the Tabernacle.

As we saw from Exodus 34, God's glory - revealed all through the story, and made visible in a cloud of fire - is most clearly seen in his goodness. And we have seen his glorious goodness brought to its great fulfilment in Jesus Christ!

And so now we too, "who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (1 Corinthians 3:18)

🅣🅗🅘🅢 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we begin a short series, reflecting on Paul's wonderful prayer in Ephesians 3:14-21

🅛🅐🅢🅣 🅢🅤🅝🅓🅐🅨 we reflected on God's restoration of his people after their devastating fall into idolatry. With Moses up on the mountain, the people created a golden calf, a false god to worship. In response God warns that they will enter the land without his presence to guide and be with them.

However, Moses knows that a life without God is no life at all, so he pleads that God would go with him and with the people. Moses was the mediator the people needed, and because of his faithfulness God restored the people. Jesus, the greater Moses, is the mediator we need! We look to Christ for restoration and hope.

The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’ (Exodus 34:14)
