“Then, Bāhiya, you should train yourself thus: In reference to the seen, there will be only the seen. In reference to the heard, only the heard. When there is no you there, you are neither here, nor yonder nor between the two. This, just this, is the end of suffering.” - The Buddha

The beauty of the bush, the call of birds, the stillness of Vijayaloka make a perfect setting for us to reflect on these words of the Buddha. What can such simple words have for us in our search for freedom?

Designed for those who identify as men, this retreat asks of participants a medium level of knowledge and practice of meditation. The program will include talks and discussion, meditations and puja, and several days of noble silence. There will also be the opportunity to discuss your practice with Order Members and to relax in the bush and swim in the river.
Led by Dharmagatu, Karunamitra and Dharmamati. Book in here ---> https://sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au/retreats/mens-meditation-retreat-2022

With covid conditions ever-changing, we're always in the process of refining our policy in order to help keep everyone who comes on retreat safe. At present for upcoming retreats at Vijayaloka however, and as per NSW Health guidelines, you do NOT need to be double vaccinated, or show evidence of vaccination status, to come on retreat.
An important part of Buddhist practice is showing care for each other, and having an interest in the welfare of other beings - with this attitude in mind, if you are coming on retreat and are able to do a self-test to make sure you're clear before you arrive, this will help to protect your fellow retreatants, regardless of your vaccination status.🙏🥰

Rainbow Retreat: An Introduction to meditation and Buddhism.

To celebrate Mardi Gras, we are hosting a weekend retreat for anyone who identifies as LGBTQI+, as well as anyone who is supportive of and celebrates diverse sexualities.

The retreat will introduce meditation and Buddhist teachings and is an excellent way for those who are completely new to meditation or more experienced meditators wanting to spend a whole weekend in supportive conditions, with like-minded people, away from the distraction of everyday life.

We teach two Buddhist meditation practices: Mindfulness of Breathing, for developing awareness, integration and clarity of mind; and Mettā Bhāvanā (“development of loving kindness”), which brings about a gentle but radical transformation of our emotional world. We will help you to set up in good posture and give a fully led practice, so there is no need for any previous experience.

Along with practical instruction we'll give some background on where meditation fits into the bigger picture of Buddhist practice and worldview.

As well as time for practice and discussion with like-minded friends, there will also be plenty of time to relax and explore the beautiful bushland.

4TH - 6TH FEBRUARY - 11th STEP RECOVERY RETREAT.

Meditation and mindfulness practice is conducive to our recovery from the addictions that hold us back from a life of freedom. Set amidst a tranquil bushland and supportive conditions, this retreat is ideal for learning and practising meditation with others in recovery - a great opportunity to start a practice or take it deeper in supportive conditions with likeminded people and allow some kindness and mindfulness into your life.

All welcome, no experience necessary.

We love our volunteer sangha!
However, there are times when Vijayaloka is booked out, either by other organisations, or by parts of our community holding private or solitary retreats for many reasons. These events aren't listed on our website.
It's great having people come and chip in, giving their time and energy to keep Vijayaloka beautiful and operational. However as one enterprising order member can attest, it's frustrating getting to Vijayaloka only to find it's occupied.
We'll be keeping everyone up to date on these times to avoid confusion. If you're thinking of heading up to Vijayaloka for a little impromptu service, best to check with the Centre in advance or keep an eye out on social media / website for bookings.

At a look, these dates include -
January 8 - 16
January 16 - 21
January 21 - 24
June 16 - 24
November 24 - December 2
December 28 and over to new year!

These dates may be added to as sangha carve out some time for their groups, or themselves for some solitary practice.
If you would like to join us in regular volunteering up at Vijayaloka, please email and we'll loop you in! 🥰🙏

GOODBYE 2021!
Anyone interested in retreat this year, head on over to sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au to check out upcoming offerings. There'll be a lot going on - from introductory retreats for newcomers of all types, to Qi Gong, meditation, work retreats, as well as retreats for young people, women, gay men (and straight ones obviously!) through to addiction recovery and order retreats.
Some numbers will still be limited (thanks covid) and we'll have to deal with restrictions as the landscape changes in the new year, but they're off the launchpad and bookable! Happy retreating everyone!
