Happy New Year.
Looking for a new year's resolution. What about reading through the whole Bible in a year, or two years or three. Elder Jack Mock recommends the 5 Day reading Plan. It allows you two other days in the week to meditate deeper on the previous readings; or to catch up the ones you missed. It follows the Old Testament chronologically thus giving you the storyline of the whole Bible. You will notice that it starts off with Genesis and Mark's Gospel. These are probably the earliest written and the shortest so as to get your Bible reading going. Alternatively, you could do the 5 days over 2 or 3 weeks. If reading is not for you, consider using an audio Bible. The Audio ESV Bible is available for mobiles, tablets and desktops.

If Christmas is about God the divine coming into the world through Jesus Christ the Son of God, there’s a basic question that floats through the air. The question is, “With what purpose does he come to our midst?” What is he here to do? Does he come in peace or does he bring a sword?

Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled!

There’s an old saying, I can’t remember exactly how it goes. But it’s something like, “When the pastor comes to the dinner party, the dinner table falls silent”. I really don’t think it’s true anymore, because these days no one cares what the pastor thinks of them. That’s fine, I’m not salty about that or anything. But the principle is, when someone truly great comes by, your awe can quickly turn into fear. “Will I make a fool of myself if I open my mouth? What will they think of me? If only they knew my secrets, I would be sunk!”

Would you want God to be around? Some of you might. Some of you will have angry questions for him, probably. Some of you want desperately to see his face, your own damnation be damned. But I think most of us would fear. For me, I can’t even handle ordinary human beings knowing my deepest shames, why would I want the God of the heavens in my business?

The profound gift of Christmas is that he came not to judge, but to heal. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3.17). The time of judgment will come, that’s for his return. But at Christmas, we remember that God made the first move for reconciliation. Do you know how important the first move is? At the risk of being redundant, without the first move, peace will never happen. When two parties are at war, the party that makes the first move to sue for peace will risk the biggest loss. They make themselves vulnerable by laying down their arms because the enemy can keep fighting.

At Christmas, we remember that Jesus was born into the world, not to wield a sword but to sue for peace. He came into enemy territory, made himself vulnerable, put himself in the hands of the enemy, and ultimately experienced the biggest possible loss. The part I can’t fully wrap my head around is that God had all the cards. He is God! He is righteous, the judge, and also the aggrieved party to begin with. We could have had judgment right away. He could have dealt with us swiftly and justly. We’d be lost, hopeless, doomed. Instead, Christmas happened.

How can the infinite touch the finite? How can the eternal break into the here and now? The Creator of everything, the one who sustains all of life, makes it rain, waters the fields and makes plants grow, the King of heaven and earth made his dwelling place among humankind. Can our minds even handle such a thing?

Veiled in fresh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity

One of the central mysteries of the Christian faith is that of the incarnation. How can it be that God became human? Well here’s another question. What would a living relationship with a transcendent God look like without the incarnation? What kind of relationship can an ant have with a human? And yet both ants and humans, theologically speaking, are in the same category of being: they are both creatures. But imagine being the God of the universe, transcendent in every manner, wholly separate and unlike anything or anyone else in all of the cosmos, which you created. And imagine desiring a true, authentic relationship with one of your creatures.

What can an ant understand about a human? In what ways can they meaningfully communicate, collaborate, or negotiate? If even that is unfathomable, then how much more so a relationship between us and God.

I am not saying I understand the incarnation. I said it’s a mystery. But I think we can know why. The Son of God became a man so that we might understand God. We could not traverse the infinite to be with him, so God came down to be with us.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1.14

The incarnation is the ultimate condescension. We often think of that word in a negative sense, but all it really means is that God came down. There is no contempt in his act, only compassion. When you’re being condescending to someone, you are often speaking to make them feel small, to bring them low. But God came to lowly creatures to lift us up and make us significant. He condescended because if he didn’t, we could never cross the gulf between us and him. He did the only thing that could bridge us.

Imagine that. Observing Christmas after a year that the world’s just had. Getting excited about a birth in a year when we’ve seen so much death. Celebrating life and light in a world plunged in darkness.
And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men

What can I write to get convince you about the sorrow of the world? Should I point to the stats and data of global Covid deaths? Do I wax poetic about the rise of authoritarianism in countries across the world? Or is this completely unnecessary, like convincing a fish that water is wet? What might be better is for you to think about what ways that death and pain has touched you personally this year. How have you suffered?

Advent is a time of longing and anticipation. Christmas is a time of longing fulfilled. It’s about the light breaking into the darkness, the dawn coming over the horizon, late rains pouring over an arid and thirsty land. It’s a time for you to think both big picture and small picture. Here’s the big picture:

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor does he sleep
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men

In the grand timeline of human history, God has decisively shown that he is not absent, he is not ignorant or ambivalent to the pain of the world. He has not abandoned us or left us to our damnation. The small picture is you realizing that he is not absent in your life. He is not ignorant or ambivalent to your pain.

Why are you hurting? What has caused you sorrow? Where’s your anxiety? He is not dead or asleep. When you were far, he drew near. When you were in darkness, the light of the world entered, for you.

Evil is not a real thing the way Good is. I’m not saying that Evil is not real at all, I mean that it doesn’t have substance or meaning quite in the same way that Good does. Evil has no substance on its own, it’s the perversion of the actual thing. So for example, lies are a perversion of truth, adultery is a perversion of holy matrimony, and death is the perversion or undoing of life itself.

If this is the case, then it tells us something about the concepts of vengeance and justice. Vengeance is justice perverted. It is justice tainted with wrath, bloodlust, and brutality.

Human vengeance is the opposite of God’s justice. God’s justice is final, but vengeance is perpetual and endless. God’s justice is fair, it renders each their due, but human vengeance is unbalanced and disproportionate.

A while ago, I read an article about an Albanian teenager who has spent his entire life imprisoned inside his family’s house. He has never been able to set foot outside because the instant he leaves his home, someone will try to kill him. Many years before, his father killed another man, and according to the ancient laws of blood feud in that part of the world, the victim’s family is allowed to exact revenge by killing the murderer or any male member of the murderer’s family. Because this boy’s dad was a murderer, his life is forfeit, ruined, over before it started. You gotta read the whole article, it’s devastating. [https://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/10/world/europe/10feuds.html]

It’s not always this dramatic, but on this side of eternity we are all too familiar with the cycle of vengeance. Vengeance is like a disease. You get it, but in the process of it working itself out within you, other people around you catch it. It’s contagious. As you express yourself through retribution, you are getting other people sick, you are sneezing hatred onto them, you are making them both a victim of revenge and its newest perpetrator.

Vengeance pollutes the heart and fills the world with hate. How can we arrest this cycle? The only way to break the chains is to choose not to strike back. To lay down your arms. To eat the cost and forgive.

Jesus broke the cycle of vengeance. “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing!” When someone harms you or someone you love, the desire to punish, to exact revenge is so powerful, so natural. It shouldn’t be hard to appreciate the magnitude of Jesus’ mission. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

When Christ was born into that manger so long ago, the world was opened to a new rhythm, a new paradigm of living that we hadn’t known before. We can turn the other cheek. We can answer hate with love. We can pursue peace amidst bloodshed. It started with him. He made it possible. And he is going to complete the work. Vengeance will give way to peace and justice.
